It’s been a full week since the ModSwap!

You’ve seen photos of the event, and you’ve seen what a couple of my guests took home, but you haven’t yet seen the lovely pieces that I picked out for myself! I’ve already worn each article at least once {I can’t seem to stop wearing my new heels!}, and I wanted to share them all with you. Here are some photos of two looks I’ve constructed around my new Swap finds:

Look 1 makes me feel like the fanciest of all the Girl Scouts { Watch out, Troop Beverly Hills! }. The neck tie is one of my newest creations, and several of the other pieces in this look were acquired at the Swap. There is really something to be said about skirts, I’m finding. Although you might not really think it, skirts are so much more comfortable than pants! I guess I always used to consider myself a jeans + tee-shirt girl because they seem comfy and lax, but what I’ve come to find is that it’s the exact opposite. Denim is restrictive! The drape of skirts makes me feel both relaxed and fancy at the same time — I’m in love!

Look 2 will be perfect for summer { but I just couldn’t wait! }. Pairing warm-weather dresses with a cardigan and tights brings a pop of colour and excitement into dreary winter days. They say we’ll be having up to twelve inches of snow tonight so I may end up putting this dress back on to make summer feel less far away. I love winter, but usually by the time that March rolls around I’m ready for some romping around town in colourful dresses.

By the way, it’s the same deal with dresses as with skirts — comfy and cozy. Plus, when you wear a dress it’s just so much easier to style. You don’t have to find a top and a bottom that match; the dress has got you completely covered! What’s not to love about that? From here on out, I’m buying only skirts and dresses unless I happen to fall in love with a certain pair of pants. Trousers, too, are incredibly comfortable, so I suppose I won’t rule those out just yet.

As you can tell, I made out very well. I got these two tops above as well as so many bits + pieces of the two outfits photographed. I hope the other girls were as happy with their scores as I am with mine! I wish you all could have been there to keep us company.

Have a lovely evening!

We do a lot of little updates to our apartment.

To me, a home is more than just where you hang your hat. It should be a place where you feel comfortable, happy, and for creative individuals like Ryan + I  – it should be a place where you become inspired. Although our flat is not our dream home yet, we find that living in a space that is well thought out and beautiful helps to enhance our creativity throughout the day. When our apartment is messy, we feel messy. When it is clean and pretty, we feel ready for anything! We don’t plan on living here forever, but while we’re here we want to make the very best of it. If you, too, want to turn your current quarters into a more inspiring space, here are 5 tips on how to do just that:

Make a list of the things that you already love. This could include anything from the hardwood floor to the throw pillows on your couch, or even a certain colour scheme that you already have going. I love the little decor items that we have scattered about our apartment like this vintage breakfast tray, our handmade cloth napkins, and little rustic touches like a pinecone + feathers.

Study your list for similarities and prominent features. Are there recurring colours, shapes, or styles? Is there anything on this list that has obvious accessories? For example: I love the modern shape of our coffee table so I might try to reflect this in future purchases by choosing side tables, lamps, or chairs that have a similar form or are from the mid-century era.

Make a pinboard on Pinterest of images that inspire you. This could include everything from photos of other peoples’ homes that you would love to live in to colour palettes that tickle your fancy. Work from your “likes” list in collecting similar images, but pin anything that gives you that excited design feeling! I have several pinboards going for specific rooms so that when I decide to make some changes to that space I already have visuals of what I like and what works, to inspire me.

Make a second list, but this time include all of the things you dislike about your space. Be specific. I often say that I hate our entire bathroom, but that’s not exactly true. I like the wall colour and the layout alright, but I dislike the tiles, the cabinet under the sink, the fixtures, and the unprofessional little “fixes” that have been done to our very old building over the years, many of which are visible in the bathroom. Try to pinpoint details in this list so you’ll have a more realistic idea of what you want to change.

Brainstorm ways to update the dislikes list to be more like the loves list. You are looking for fluidity here and melding the changes you make with your established tastes will help you match your changes to reflect the style in the rest of the space. Make sure you write down all of the ideas you have for updates, but only pick one task at a time to tackle. Making small progress will give you the confidence to keep going and seeing each little task completed will empower you as well!

Most of all, have fun getting creative!

When I saw Kate’s rolling coat rack DIY, I just knew I had to give it a try.

My honey and I spent longer looking for the parts in the hardware store than we did putting this together as a pre-Valentine’s Day project. It truly was very simple and I was able to take plenty of photos of him constructing it because it turned out to be pretty much a one person job. Once it was finished, it came in incredibly handy — especially when I hosted my ModSwap! Here are some more photos of the rack that I couldn’t keep to myself any longer:

We plan on eventually painting the whole thing one solid colour { like Kate did to hers }, but we’ll probably go with a surf green or a yellow rather than something as bright as is in the tutorial. Tax return time is definitely a good time for this project seeing as plumbing pipe is pretty expensive. Although it seems like it would be, this is not a budget project unless you happen to have these bits + pieces already hanging around your garage or workshop.

As you can see, we’ve already put it to several different uses. I’m not quite sure what purpose the rack will hold in the future, but I love having it around. The wheels make it super easy to move about, and I can’t wait to get this baby painted! If you decide to give the tutorial a try, I’d love to see how yours turns out!

Happy building!

Have you ever had something happen that you just can’t explain?

Have you seen something, heard something, felt something strange? Ever had a story told that just chilled you to the bone? Every one of us has had something happen in the past that is unusual in some eerie way. Whether it is an unbelievable ghost story or a sighting still unexplained, your story is waiting to be shared.

My Mister has been dreaming up a podcast idea for quite some time in which he passes on tales just like yours. No matter how simple your story may be, we’re ready and waiting to hear it. Type it up with as much detail as you can recall and email it to me at Jeeze.Julia@gmail.com. Then, tune in and listen as Ryan shares it out loud with the world on his new podcast Lesser Known Tales. I’ll provide the link as soon as his first episode is ready to be aired!

Can’t wait for some new scaries!

xx.

P.s. Might I suggest you type it up by candlelight? Everything is spookier by candlelight.

Snapshots from our week:

What a whirlwind of a week! The most exciting part was without a doubt hosting the ModSwap. I had been dreaming and scheming about this event for months and finally it came to fruition in the most wonderful way. I realized that I really love party planning. It’s strange how we can still be learning things about ourselves after decades of living inside these heads. Should I have realized this by now? Eh, either way, I’m glad to know it now.

Also lovely, my best friend was able to attend the party, coming up to stay with us from New Hampshire. It’s wonderful that we still have the same connection we had in third grade, and that though we’ve both grown and changed so much, it seems to have happened in the same general direction so we can share new ideas with one another. The one doing the listening is still just as excited as the one doing the telling.

You may recall that I was worried last week about the crocuses coming up only to be crushed by our New England frost, and I’m sad to say that it may be the case. I noticed tiny green arms reaching up through the dirt last weekend on a particularly warm day, and then we had snow on Tuesday night. I’m hoping my very hardest that they’ll be able to pull through, those sturdy little flowers. Send them your strongest wishes if you’ve got the chance!

Happy Friday!

Here are more details from my swapping event:

The swap went off without a hitch! Our guests started arriving around 7 pm with bags full of clothing and accessories that they no longer wanted for themselves. These were pieces that either didn’t fit properly, weren’t worn very often, or had been loved a lot by their previous owners but were now ready for a change. With such a stylish crowd, there were plenty of gems ready to find new homes and I think everyone left happy at the end of the night. ModCloth sent a dress, a top, and a jacket to contribute, as well as two fantastic necklaces – all brand new – and I found myself drooling over several pairs of shoes that came in with our attendees.

While the bulk of the swappers sat down in the living room to enjoy some kettle corn, muddy buddies, cookies, and cocktails, both of us Julias went into the swap room { aka. my bedroom } to sort through the mounds of clothing. As we sorted, we could hear laughter and conversation pouring out of the living room along with the playlist that I created for the event.  I was really nervous since it was my first time hosting a swap, but when I heard those giggles I couldn’t help but smile.

In keeping with our mid-century camping theme, we organized each category of clothing — pants, tops, menswear, etc. —  into vintage suitcases and labeled them with brown paper and twine. We hung dresses and jackets on the rolling rack that Ryan and I made as one of our Valentine’s Day activities. Then only moments into the swapping action, ready-to-be-loved clothing was excitedly scattered about atop our Pendleton-esque wool blanket, and swappers were falling in love with new { to them } finds.

When we all had filled our totes to the brim, we sat down again in the living room for round two of snacks and drinks, and gabbed about our new swap scores. I had made some peter pan collars, girl scout ties, and even a scalloped collar to give away as free swag to my guests and this was the time to hand them out. There is nothing more satisfying that a full belly, good company, and a bag full of newly acquired clothing to style.

Over all, it was a wonderful night. The guys didn’t really seem as into it as us ladies  { we did have a small section for men! }, but that was fine because we needed all the space we could get for trying things on, stashing our already filled bags { as we went back in for more }, and tossing the pieces we had each decided against. Michelle has already done a write-up on the event for Swap.com and one on her own blog, as well! And Ashley showed off her finds, too! Make sure you have a peek at their perspectives before you dash away to your other favourite internet spots.

Would you host your own clothing swap?

xx.

P.s. Special thanks to ModCloth and Swap.com for sponsoring the event! It was a truly fantastic opportunity!

I have so much to share!

Last night was such a thrill! Perhaps you remember my mentioning the ModSwap that I was selected for months ago. My friend Brittan and I were chosen by ModCloth and Swap.com to co-host a sponsored clothing swap for our friends. They were so generous to send us a box of goodies that we gave away as free swag to our guests as well as several brand new ModCloth items to include in the swap. I felt so lucky and excited to have this opportunity!

Unfortunately, Brittan had to step back from hosting due to other circumstances so Ryan stepped up to the plate and helped me plan the event, then my very best friend { the other Julia } made the trip up to Maine to assist as well. The event went swimmingly and I couldn’t have been happier with the turn out.

It was an intimate affair since we only have a one bedroom apartment, but I really enjoyed the company and the atmosphere. Ashley of the Portland based blog Sweet William and Michelle who manages the Goodwill of Northern New England blog were able to attend along with some of my closest friends. We provided drinks including a special cocktail that our chef friend Kaylon created just for the event. Several guests brought snacks to share and we set the stage to our Mid-Century Camping theme, then got swapping! Tomorrow I hope to share more photos and details of the event in hopes that I inspire you to organize a clothing swap in your area!

Have a lovely evening, friends!

This is a good weekend.

Yesterday I was so flattered to see that my favourite fabric supplier made mention of me on her blog { check it out by clicking here! }. I have been buying fabrics from Dory for awhile now and have never been disappointed with what I’ve received when ordering. She offers so many organic options in her shop and ships them from Maine, so for me they’re a very environmentally responsible choice. If ever you’re looking for a quality fabric, a worthy good, if you will, I’d highly recommend her Etsy supply shop!

If you’re not a sewer you can still enjoy her beautiful work and honest approach to life by purchasing something that she has made by hand { like that fantastic hat in the top photo! } in her other Etsy shop, or by following her blogs! This one is dedicated to sewing related stuff, and this one for the behind the scenes details! I love her down to Earth perspective and appreciate everything she’s done for me in this past year.

Also, Dory is so generous that she is offering all of my readers 15% off her gorgeous organic fabrics from now until Sunday the 26th when you use the coupon code JEEZEJULIA! Go get some beautiful new material!

Have a lovely Sunday!

What a dream!

This is the Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire { not too far from home, but just far enough that it feels like a getaway }. It’s probably the most beautiful little Inn that I’ve ever come across. I mean, can you imagine staying here for a relaxing five day vacation? Going snow shoeing, hiking through the White Mountains, borrowing their bicycles to explore the grounds or wandering on foot through the gardens in the summer? Sounds absolutely ideal!

As if that isn’t enough, though, they’re offering me a chance to have all of that plus the exclusive opportunity to go behind the scenes! If I like the Maple Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast that I’m eating for breakfast, I can just waltz right into the kitchen and have their chef teach me how to make it! I can even sit in on staff meetings if I’d like! The coolest part about the whole deal? They’re encouraging me to share all of my little findings with you. I get to snap photos, take notes, play reporter, and tell you guys all about it. But, I’ll need your help to be selected.

If you want to get the inside scoop from this darling little Inn, vote for me { Julia Berry } in this four question survey. I promise I’ll share every detail of the adventure! Have a peek at their facebook fan page and their website if you’re interested in learning more!

Thanks for the help!

xx.

Snapshots from our week:

| highlights |

Last Saturday I thrifted with Chelsea + Samantha. I found this fun little hat { that I can’t stop wearing } and the next day a bird pooped on it. Ryan tells me this is good luck. I beg to differ.

We went on our first multiple couple date skipping right over a double date to a triple date! We met up at Novare Res for their Valentine’s Day beer + chocolate pairing, then came back up to our house for board games. I always really love walking around the city in jovial groups like we did on that night. It was, coincidentally, the night before Valentine’s Day, so we were keeping our eyes peeled for the bandit. We may actually have passed him { or her } unwittingly, we’re not sure. But we did happen to see the giant heart pictured hanging from the WCSH6 building.

On the 14th, it was heart pancakes for breakfast, heart gawking around town, then we each picked out a new album at the record store. For dinner I cooked since he does nearly all of our cooking and I wanted to give him a break. We had a cozy night in watching Anonymous and soaking our feet.

Today I heard the very first spring bird of the season. The temperature was 45 degrees fahrenheit, and I’m worried that crocuses are going to start accidentally popping up only to be frozen again before spring comes. It certainly was a nice thought, though, to hear the sounds of warmer weather and feel a warmer breeze. Spring is such a lovely season.

Happy Friday, all.

xx.
