When I made Ryan his first bow tie, I knew I’d have to find him a tutorial.

I found one online to show him, and together we both learned from that. Now he’s gotten pretty good at it since I keep making him new ties. And even I can do it without looking, thanks to testing out each one that I put up in  my Etsy shop! So we thought we’d make a video tutorial of our own! I had lots of fun working with video editing again {I haven’t done it in years!} and finding my way around iMovie 09 which I had never actually played with. I hope this helps any of you out there who have been wondering how it’s done!

Happy bow tying!

I’m so honored to have my first blogger product review!

Chloe of Lazy Explorers tried out my Peter Pan Collar recently with a very cute polka dot dress she owns and made the sweetest little outfit of it! I’d love for you all to have a peek at her blog {I just know you’ll love it!} and see how she styled my detachable collar. Plus, while you’re there you can tell her how you’d wear the peter pan collar if you added it to your wardrobe. Or, if this classic collar style isn’t right for you, I’ve got a few other options, too, including the lady tie – so much fun. Have a peek at my shop if you’re interested!

Enjoy your night!

Adding something unique to a wardrobe can be a difficult step.

Most people find that their closets contain very similar styles, but in varying colors and patterns, or very similar colors and patterns, but on different articles of clothing. We all have particular trends and habits within our comfort zone, so even if you like something new and different on someone else, it may be hard to take the plunge and add that piece to your own collection.

One thing that helps me to branch out from my norm is to test out or imagine the article I’m considering with various pieces that I already have. Sometimes I’ll find that one little accessory can change the whole look of an outfit I wear a lot, or that it encourages me to mix in things that I already own, but don’t often wear.

To imagine my scalloped collar as an element of my wardrobe, I added it, like a cherry on top, to three different looks created from my closet. I found that it works very nicely with any top that has a higher neckline, but it could also be worn with the right lower neckline, if it were treated as a statement necklace instead of a collar! Which look is your favourite?

Look 1 | Feminine, and slightly dressed up, this is a great look for a work day. It’s just a boxy top and a skirt that are polished off with my detachable collar and a belt!

Look 2 | You may remember this Alice in Wonderland outfit! It’s so simple – just a dress, some flats, and the collar!

Look 3 | Can you say day off? This is an ideal way to be comfortable and ready for anything, while still keeping things cute!

How would you wear the scalloped collar?

What better article to style in February than a cardigan?

It’s been awhile since the three of us have each styled one piece of clothing to share with you, but Liz, Chelsea, + I are back to show how we wore this comfy little mustard sweater! We prefaced this little photo shoot with lots of thrifting { I’ll share my finds this weekend! }, lunch together at our favourite Asian restaurant, and a surprise visit with a childhood friend of mine. Over all, the day was fantastic.

Here are our photos:

This is pretty much the ideal cardigan, I’d say. It’s a pop of colour, a comfy knit, and a very easy style to wear so the possibilities are endless! I have a similar cardigan that I wear all the time. It seems like it’s just the perfect combination of everything and it can be dressed up or dressed down according to your mood and your plans for the day.

| Julia |

I mixed the sweater with a lacy top, and wool trousers. The textures of each layer are a really neat mix when they’re all pulled together. Although the look is professional and classic { especially with my newly thrifted hat! }, it is still so, so, so comfortable! I could wear this to work on one of my office days! Another plus? It incorporates three of my favourite things: lockets, layers, + lace.

| Chelsea |

This is my favourite combination that we came up with in this round. The horizontal lines on her top and the vertical ones in the pleats make for a very structured aesthetic, but the way that the sweater overlaps both really pulls them together! So fun and feminine! This was the perfect look for our thrifting adventure earlier in the day — it was functional and totally adorable.

 | Liz |

Not everyone can pull off a turban, but I think Liz nailed it with this ensemble! She brought in some more colour with her copper corduroys and in the scarf that she fashioned  atop her head. This would be a great outfit to wear on a light hike through the woods since it’s so practical, but still really fun. Don’t forget to invite me, Liz!

So that’s what we wore this past Saturday! Have you noticed that our background keeps changing? We rotate around our apartments depending on whose item it is that we’re swapping each time! Since this is Chelsea’s cardigan, we took photos in her room. Let me show you a few more photos of the space. You’ll be as in love with it as I am!

She has a great eye for design, no? It must be because she’s a photographer. She’s also an excellent thrifter! Several of these display items were purchased on our shopping trips together. I really think she may be my good luck charm because I always find the best things when we go looking together. Don’t you love her space?

By the way, how would you wear this cardigan?

Really, I just like saying “Top Shop crop top”.

Liz, Chelsea, + I got together the other day to style this striped top three different ways. As usual, we shared some treats (thanks to my Aunt Cindy and Chelsea for making them!) while we tried on different looks and took photos to share with you.

Here’s what we came up with:

I got this tee while I was in London last summer visiting my dear friend Chanel, and I literally wear it all the time. It’s so versatile because of its basic colours, but it’s not boring because of the shape. I usually hate wearing tee-shirts because they make me feel frumpy, but this one encourages me to think outside of the box.

| Chelsea |

This is such a classic look. I can definitely picture myself wearing this high-waisted shorts/crop top combo while going out to run errands or something of that sort. Chelsea is letting the boxy shape of the tee and the slouchy shoulders speak for itself — it’s comfy, cute, and at the same time a little punk-y.

I really regret not getting a close-up of the necklace she was wearing. It was a section of a reindeer antler that her Dad brought home from Finland! So neat!

| Julia |

I love getting all dolled up and girly {don’t let my blog fool you, though, most days I don’t even change out of my pajamas}, so I really feel like this look is me. The little collar in this outfit was a complete accident — I just threw the tee-shirt on over a collared romper to show the girls how it fit, but I really love it and I’m thinking I’ll make some detachable collars to sell in my shop to share the look with you!

For the rest of the ensemble, I tucked the tee into a high waisted skirt, belted it so my waist didn’t disappear, poked out the little peter pan collar, and added a touch of colour with my cardigan. My boots helped to match the brown in my belt, and the tights {yet again} added some texture to the look. Can you tell we love patterned tights?

This look would be cute for a coffee shop date. Makes me want to sit in a cafe window and watch passersby while sipping a seasonal blend!

| Liz |

Liz put together the perfect outfit for a play date with little ones! It’s easy to move in and layered, so if she got too hot teaching her niece to do cartwheels, she’d be prepared.

This look was a fun experiment in rule breaking! With an eclectic edge, she mixed and matched patterns and foundation colours that people usually avoid putting together. Black, navy, gray, and brown all in one outfit? No problem! She totally made it work.

And then we sat down to devour some sweets.

Thanks for sharing this second edition of How We Wore It! Our next item to style is a fashion staple that typically gets layered over, so it’ll be a bit more of a challenge to make it different. I can’t wait to see what we all come up with!

How would you wear this striped crop top?

Welcome aboard for the first ever How We Wore It!

We’re starting this series out with Liz’s American Apparel convertible dress. We each played around with the dress on our own, and figured out how we’d most like to wear it, then gathered together to share with each other {+ take photos to share with you}! This dress has so much potential!

| Here’s what we came up with |

The only time we could meet up was at night, so the photos are a bit dark, but we did have a lovely time swapping the dress around, chatting, + sipping wine together. How We Wore It photo shoots are rapidly becoming a new favourite of mine!

I wore the dress with the straps crossed in the front. I belted it just above my natural waist with a thick black belt, tossed on a striped cardigan, + slipped into some black flats. It’s a simple look, but something that I feel very comfortable in. This is a great combination for any event. It’s casual enough because of the flats + the cotton in the dress that I could wear this out during the day, but it’s also dressy enough for a date night.

Chelsea kept it casual by adding jacket, but really played up the details in her look. I love the locket, textured tights, + oxfords. And by tying the straps of the dress into a bow, she gave the outfit a focal point. This look would be great for a library date. She looks adorable, but still practical, + also a bit studious. Looks lovely, my dear!

Liz totally wowed us with her exotic look! The cropped top is daring, but not scandalous because of the way she chose to wear the dress — as a high waisted skirt! The slouchy boots, gold medallion, + head scarf are so reminiscent of a gypsy-like style {Esmeralda anyone?}. What a fun way to wear the dress! Liz was heading out the door to our friend Don‘s show as soon as we finished snapping photos, + this outfit was perfect for the occasion!

So that’s it for our first How We Wore It post! Hope you enjoyed seeing our remixes, + that you come back to see some more! Next up is a super cute Top Shop crop top {say that ten times fast!} that I got while I was over in London last year! Can’t wait to share!

How would you have worn it?

I am pleased to announce a brand new feature for my blog!

HOW WE WORE IT will be a recurring feature where my friends {Chelsea + Liz!} and I each style one piece of clothing separately! Each of us has a distinct style, so we’re likely to come up with totally different themes using the very same item. It’ll be really exciting to explore the versatility of our respective closets, and we may even inspire you to try some mixing and matching of your own!

We recognize that it’s really easy for everyone to get stuck in a style rut. Jeans and a sweater used to be my go-to outfit for work days, and lazy days, and days off, and…any other day, until I realized that I had a closet full of pretty clothes that never really got touched. So I encourage myself to try different things by making new combinations and avoiding my established style. I feel like I’ve pretty much gotten that down now so I wanted to branch out even more.

By bringing in Liz + Chelsea, I’ll be opening my mind to new tastes and flair!

Without further ado, meet my friends!

| LIZ |

Liz is big fun! Her clothing + personality are eclectic, bohemian, + expressive. There’s usually a lot of layering involved (which works out quite well when you live in New England), + her ensembles are often topped off with a hat, headband, or scarf! With a degree in Dance + Performance Arts, it isn’t surprising that most everything she wears seems to have a motion of its own.

| CHELSEA |

Chelsea is a super cute little lady! She often opts for feminine fits like these high waisted jeans, or skirts + dresses belted on her natural waist. She flirts with florals, stacks up stripes, + totally rocks the granny boots. Chelsea also happens to share my love of cross-body bags + vintage coats, + makes a most excellent thrifting partner!

We’ll be back some time next week to share our first piece with you!

xx.
