Corresponding with my pen-pal, Felicity (Flick for short) has been wonderful!

Shell of Kitty + Buck has worked so hard with Nat of Modern Buttercup to manage this letter exchange, and I’m so very grateful for the effort that’s been put in! My pen-pal is so much fun! We’re having a blast writing and decorating letters to send to one another and the ice-breakers that are posted for us to try are insanely fun.

One of the tasks we were given was to ask each other 10 questions. I love how Flick packaged up each of my questions separately! Each was so thoughtful and exciting to open. This project has been such an inspiration for me and although I haven’t had much time to dedicate to my letter writing, I try my very best!

When my brother was living in Germany, the letters we got from him had these red, white, and blue stripes around the edge. I was thrilled to see them grace the border of my first letter from Felicity. Somehow that’s what it took to really sunk in that she was on the other side of the Earth from me. Funny how little things like that can make such a huge impression. This is such a big world!

I’ve always loved getting mail, but I think the letters I get from her are my favourite. And even though we’re grown ups, I still think having a pen-pal does something really great for a lady. Check out the flickr page for snapshots of other Lovely Letters!

Have a wonderful weekend!

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve blogged.

This weekend we were gifted with a nearly perfect set of days, and since we’ve been so busy and spread thin lately, I’m feeling very thankful for each one. Here is what made them up, the ingredients for the perfect day (or days):

I’m expecting things to settle soon. one. Because we’ve put down some deposits for our wedding particulars (which feels so, so exciting!). We’ve made most of our decisions and are now just finalizing the big things. Once those are set, we can just enjoy the process of getting inspired, and making/collecting the perfect decor and details. two. I’ll finally have a consistent schedule at a day job that I love in just one week. My new job inspires me and flatters some of my most basic interests. It feels like me. So next week my life will be organized into a weekly routine and the only things in it will be things that I love. No more working nights. No more of having a different work schedule every week. Without consistency I’ve found that I feel very scattered and can’t focus even on the things I love to do the most.

xx.

P.s. My brother-in-law built that playhouse for LG from scraps! Childhood dream come true! My family joked that he was actually building it for me instead of my niece – ha! (I would have been just as excited as she was.)

This book gave words to the things I knew in my youth.

As my years stack up, I have found myself drifting further from what I have always known as truth. Although, this year I have taken it upon myself {and with a great deal of patience from my Mister} to begin moving back toward the purest and simplest beauty which I have always known – the woods. I think it must be accurate to say that we know the most about our reality when we’re small, and when “life” gets in the way of things we begin to forget what it’s most important to know.

When I was a child my parents nearly had to beg me to try to make friends. I had some girls at school that I would sit with at lunch, laugh with, and invite to my birthday parties, but my ideal day consisted simply of myself {and sometimes my one best friend who understood} losing every hour of the day in the woods.

Now in my late 20s, as I read the pages of Walden, the curtains around the room in which I sit show evidence of the Earth’s great lungs breathing broad and heavy breaths which we recognize as the wind. It was a reminder, and a call. It’s a finger pointing in at the irony of my chosen reading spot. But even in this apartment {though I am much closer to home than I’ve been in years} I’m still amidst society and feel the qualities of being vermin infesting this space. We are all much too close together.

Truth be told, this isn’t my first viewing of the book. I earned my degree in English which, of course, included the obligatory study of the classics – Walden was part of that. But it seems to me that though my Professors were well-read and even brilliant scholars, the book may have been partly lost on them. The sections to which they directed our class, the discussions they led on the subject, were completely banal and missing the point. How could a fish teach about a mountain top? How could a city-dweller teach about the woods?

In the first session of one of my English classes in college we began by introducing ourselves and saying where we were from. My turn came, I said my name and my hometown (which only one person in the room had heard of, though we were in the same very small State that I grew up). My Professor had in fact rented my neighbor’s cabin to pass one of her summer vacations. She was awed at the fact that I lived there. She said, “That’s God’s country”. I was immediately struck by that claim and it has stuck with me ever since. Somewhere along the line humanity separated Nature from “reality” and turned it into some sort of a getaway that people with money can purchase for a weekend or a month in the summer. Knowing that she held this sort of removed novelty for the natural world, how could I expect her to understand the communion, comfort, and familiarity that Thoreau describes in his book?

I’d highly suggest your reading it, of course, but more important than turning the pages and learning of Thoreau’s account of the woods would be gaining or renewing your own. Walk amongst the trees where no sounds of traffic can reach and use your eyes, ears, nose, and skin to observe. That’s the only way you’ll know.

I heard this phrase for the first time recently.

And it’s really been keeping me sane ever since. Lately I’m feeling how long days can really be. Somehow 24 hours fly by in certain circumstances, but drag at a snail’s pace in others. I have a to-do list a mile long that can’t really get touched because I’m out of the house during my most productive hours. The days are long, but the years are short, so I must remember to take a deep breath and do the best that I can to enjoy and make the best of it all. Feel free to download the desktop size here so you can keep it in mind for your own life.

Happy hump day,

♥ Good morning, dears!
Today I’m going to do something a little different. I’ve never had a guest poster before, but since the last few weeks here in New England have been immensely hot, I thought a beach-y post would be the perfect way to cool down. So, Mary from We Heart Vintage has used her expertise to compile a brief guide to the perfect 1950s beach look!

If you’ve never heard of We Heart Vintage before, you most definitely need to have a look. Each post is concise and visual, so it’s just the right amount of information and inspiration to get me excited about vintage style. Thanks for guest posting, Mary!

This month marks the 66th anniversary of the bikini. On July 5th 1946 French Engineer Louis Reard unveiled his daring invention and fashion has been enamoured with it ever since!

The bikini has been wildly popular ever since but now we’ve flashed as much flesh as possible there’s a growing trend for vintage-inspired swimwear.

So here’s my guide to getting that perfect 1950s beach look:
50s swimsuits were cotton, which wasn’t terribly practical for the beach (but was miles better than wool which was used until the 30s!) For a fifties look go for a straight or sweetheart neckline (you can also add a detachable halter strap) and low-cut skirted briefs.
The 1950s really were a time for rejoicing in colour, so enjoy yourself and go for something as bold and beautiful as you dare: ginghams, animal prints and floral patterns were really popular.
Bikinis followed similar rules – high-waisted and low cut or skirted bikini briefs matched with halter-neck tops and beautiful bold prints.
To top off the look get yourself a straw coolie hat or bathing cap! I know a bathing cap might seem unappealing but nothing will protect your hair from sea salt, sand and sun quite as well and it definitely gives you that vintage look!
To finish off the look get some straw accessories, a pair of wedges and some cats eye sunglasses and you’re all set to look fifties-tastic on the beach!

You can and you will.

I’ve been listening to this song all morning {because I love it}, but still I believe that I can and I will. I love the attitude that our generation has – we’re inspired and we refuse to believe that we have to conform. True, it’s tiring, it’s stressful, it’s exhausting. Sometimes I get worn out, too. But we can use all of this action and ambition to our advantage and keep pushing one another to try harder and work harder. We’ll make our dreams our lives. We got this. We can and we will.

Although I love making all sorts of themed playlists,

SUMMER is my favourite theme of all. Sometimes I start my summer playlists in December, sometimes in the preceding September, I almost always have one that I’m working on for the next warm season. Summer is for upbeat, sunny songs that can bounce out of the speakers while one drives around with the sweet air swirling in the car and all around them. A soundtrack for summer is one of the best ways to capture the magic of beaches, bare feet, and bonfires, because each little moment gets caught up in the familiar songs by the end of August and will forever be reminiscent of that time. This is the new playlist I’ve made up for this year!

Now go have fun!

xx.

P.s. This summer might be so good that it needs two playlists.

Just a quick note today.

I’ve been loving this song quite awhile now, but I think somewhere along the line I forgot that I wanted to share the video with you. I don’t watch a lot of videos these days, but this one is so beautifully shot, and I find that it really provokes within me a sense of belonging and inspiration. I hope it does the very same for you. ♥ Enjoy:

explore. see. Be a part of it.

xx.

P.s. Might I suggest you watch it in full screen?
