Our days are filled with comfort.

christmas couplesnowy brick buildingvintage christmaschristmas bikeI hope your days are filled with cheer and joy. Spend as much time as you can with family, and show your loved ones how much you care. This part of the year never neglects me – I always feel the urge to share little happinesses with those around me.

Happy Christmas,

Here are some songs to hum while you walk amongst the leaves.

Some people here are saying that we’re nearly at peak-foliage. I say there’s still a whole lot of green in some places, but it won’t be long until the trees are utterly breathtaking {they’re certainly well on their way}, and the leaf-peepers are beginning to infiltrate us. Fall is Atlas‘s favourite season. He is ever-perplexed by the leaves blowing around in the air and spends hours on the windowsill flicking his head back and forth to focus on each yellow, red, or orange blur that he can. I find myself looking at his wonderment and smiling at the simplicity of his world.

I hope your day is full of simple joys, too.

I love rain…mostly.

I love how it cleanses the Earth, freshens the air, and I love the way it sounds dropping on leaves and roofs. But today I’ve spent my day avoiding it as best I can because even more than I love rain, I love snuggling up inside, warm and dry, while it’s raining outside. There’s nothing like a stormy day to make me feel comfy + cozy in my little bubble of an apartment. It reminds me how good I’ve really got it.

So I’ve made some tea, I’ve got my book, and, now that I’m home from work, I’ll get all settled in with Hugo, and Atlas, and Ryan, and spend the rest of my time avoiding the rain. There’s nothing quite like this feeling, is there?

Have a wonderful night.

I have never been an early riser.

When I was little, I’d always wake up from sleepovers to the sound of pages being turned. My best friend { and anyone else who spent the night at my house } knew to bring plenty of reading material for the morning since it took me so long to wake up. My Mom had a routine down for school mornings that included a couple of very sweet knocks on my door, then some soft words whispered in, then there were a couple of other steps before the final stomping-on-the-floor-above-my-bedroom-ceiling and yelling-at-the-top-of-her-lungs-that-I’m-going-to-make-everyone-late steps which usually did the trick. Being a chronic over-sleeper is both a wonderful gift and a terrible downfall.

On days when it’s okay for me to sleep in, I wake up with a happy excitement for the day. I eat breakfast with a smile on my face, and go about my daily tasks with enjoyment. On days when I have to get out of bed sooner than my body would like me to, I should probably live alone because of the terror that I wreak on everything around me. Let’s just get this out of the way: I am a grumpy-pants in the morning until I have fully woken up.

The good thing about being an over-sleeper is that I get amazing sleep in the morning. When most people would be awoken by the sun shining in their windows, I sleep on. When roommates or family members are moving around in the house, making breakfast, playing music, I sleep on. When the neighbors are snow-blowing, I sleep on. It’s a wonderful gift when I have nowhere that I need to be.

When I first dropped down to part time at my day job so I’d have more time at home to blog and work on my Etsy shop, I tried to maintain a similar schedule to that of my work days. I’d set my alarm for 8 am, and press snooze until I finally dragged myself out of bed around 9:30 { not what I intended, by the way }. Every night I’d go to bed thinking “I’ll get up when Ryan leaves for work”, or “I’d like to get an early start on the day and begin working at 9 am!” But I soon found that on days when I did manage to get out of bed that early, I couldn’t do much more than have breakfast and check my email until about 11. My body was sluggish and any task I attempted was done in slow-motion.

So then I thought: why fight it? This is the way that I am and now that I know, maybe I should just plan for it! I’ll stop setting an alarm and if I wake late then I work late, and that’s just the way it’ll be. That’s how nature wants it to be, right? There have to be some perks to being my own boss! So, today I got out of bed at 10 am. I woke up on my own without an alarm, and eased my way into the day as I like to do. I feel better, happier, and more capable of managing tasks now that my silly over-sleeping body has caught the necessary amount of Zs to be productive.

So, although I’d rather be an early riser and accomplish a lot in the early hours of the day, I’ve given up that dream and realized that that’s just not who I am. Now I’ll embrace my many hours of sleep, and be able to enjoy my waking hours with a rested body and mind. By the way, my best friend still brings plenty to read when she sleeps over, but these days I usually wake up to the sound of she and Ryan chatting ♥

Good morning, everyone!

Snapshots from our week:

This week had flowers, bow ties, and breakfast in bed. A lovely way to spend the first of the winter-cold days we’ve been having this year. Yesterday we got two feet of snow during the day! People went to work in the morning innocently enough, and emerged from their jobs to find cars half disappeared beneath the powder.

I happened to peek out the window around 5 pm to check on the status of the snow and saw someone struggling to unbury their car. Just up the street from him, another man was standing in the road just staring at his in frustration. I wasn’t sure quite what he was doing until he kicked the snow angrily with his foot and I realized he was overwhelmed at being trapped in.

Ryan and I grabbed our shovels and each picked a car. Twenty minutes later and they had both wiggled their ways out of that snowy mess — off toward their cozy homes! It was a fantastic way to end the week. Hope your week was just as nice.

Onward to the weekend!

This is what all of my days have looked like lately.

I’m doing a lot of staying at home + crafting since Christmas is so close! Somehow I got way behind this year, so I’m struggling to get everything done. As I type, I’m multitasking with another gift – phew! I probably won’t finish everything in time, but I’m lucky that the people in my life understand my tendency to be a bit behind.

Thanks for having a look at my day!

In our line of work, one must dress practically.

We do a lot of on-the-hands-and-knees cleaning, pushing wheelchairs, and lugging groceries. Some days there are more office tasks, but we really never know what we’re going into at the beginning of the day, so it’s important to be ready for anything.

Before Ryan headed into work the other day, I snapped a couple of photos because I was impressed with how he managed to pull together a functional and slightly fancy ensemble for his day’s work. It’s always interesting to see a tee-shirt layered under a nice cardigan, but it’s a look that I think works really well. Tee-shirts on their own sometimes feel frumpy, but when only a tiny bit of it peeks out, the tee acts almost as an exclamation point, lending some excitement to an otherwise structured look.

Atlas, too, dressed to impress {he didn’t want to feel left out}. Here you can see his crisp white collar, a saucy striped number draping over the shoulders, and he finishes the look with his fanciest white gloves. Inspired by his Dad’s colour palette, he here embraces his tawny, grays, whites, and browns, and is ready to conquer the day!

I hope you’re all doing quite well. See you tomorrow!

xx.

Sooooo…we broke down and got a tree.

Last week, when I mentioned my aversion to cutting down a tree every year, Molly left a super helpful {and persuasive} link to Christmas tree facts in a comment. Here’s the page if you’re interested. I read through a lot of the facts listed there, hoping to feel better about our holiday tradition, and when I found the following tidbit, I was completely convinced:

“Artificial trees will last for six years in your home, but for centuries in a landfill.”

There are plenty of Christmas trees planted every year on farms, and we only cut down a portion of them since each tree needs to grow for several years before it’s tall enough to be harvested. And once discarded, a real tree will begin composting and nourish the Earth again. Plastic, on the other hand, will take hundreds of years to decompose. And thanks to this realization, I will no longer feel badly for decorating my house with a fancy fir every December.

Of course, we could still do an alternative Christmas tree like this one, this one, or my lights-in-a-carboy thing, but what’s the fun in that when we could have a real one with a real Christmas smell?

So tonight, while we listen to my vintage Christmas playlist, we’ll trim our tree together. I’m so excited! Hugo clearly is, too. Can’t you tell?

Thanks for clearing that up, Molly!

Everyone knows a cat lady.

I, myself, am one. So, who better to tell you what ladies like myself enjoy?

Here are some suggestions for the cat lady in your life:

1 | A cat cap: What could be more fun than dressing up your pets? If they’re outdoor cats then this adorable little hat would actually serve a purpose {ridiculous as it may be}. If they’re indoor, then it’s just for looks. Still, it would be a super fun present for a cat lady.

2 | A lint Remover: You learn quickly when you have a cat that you’re in their world. To a cat, everything in sight is fair game. Your ear buds are a toy, your glass of water is now theirs, and your favourite sweater is their bed. I give you the most practical gift a cat owner could ever get — the fur remover.

3 | A cat mug: Chances are, your cat-mom likes coffee. Or tea. Or at least hot cocoa. Cat ladies enjoy staying in the comfort of their own home, and to give them something to do while they pet their furry purrers, how about gifting them a lovely mug. Oh, and they usually appreciate kitsch, too, so feel free to go slightly over the top.

4 | A crossword puzzle book: You could make this one yourself! Collect the crossword puzzles from your local newspaper and sort them into a little book. You can decorate it as you see fit! I often get stuck under my cats…it sounds like a weird thing to happen, but if you have cats then you’ll understand. Here’s what happens: You’re watching a movie and a little one comes over, gets comfy on your lap, and falls asleep. Then, of course, the movie ends and you’re just stuck. You don’t want to move and disturb your adorable little fluff ball so you reach over to the coffee table and pick up a crossword puzzle.

5 | A big bag: Encourage your friend to spend a night out by giving her a cute new purse to show off. It’s a nice gift for any lady, and worst case scenario, this one’s big enough to fit a cat in! You never know what kinds of situations you’ll get yourself into as a pet owner.

6 | Pet portraits: It’s as simple as that. They love their cats, this much we know. Plus, don’t you think animals always look hysterical when they’re dressed in people clothes? No? Still just me? Well, I promise your cat lady friend will appreciate it, too.

7 | A new collar: A handy little gift to give. It’s nice to have an extra collar on hand in case one breaks or is outgrown!

8 | A kitty harness: To go with your new collar, of course! Now your cat lady doesn’t even need to leave her babies behind — they can keep her company on walks or when she reads in the park.

9 | Cat eye glasses: Why not, right? When they’re out of the house, others won’t know that they’re cat ladies (so long as they’re using their lint removers, that is). So why not give them an identifying feature. A lot of people are wearing false glasses just for the look, these days. The vintage style of the glasses says, “Hey, I appreciate a simpler time”. Coincidentally, it also says “I identify with cats.” What could be more perfect?

10 | A kitty calendar: To keep track of vet appointments and all of those feline birthdays. This one’s travel sized, so she can keep it handy right in that purse you got her!

Hope your cat lady friend loves these!

xx.

First, Ryan made the most delicious pumpkin pancakes.

Then, Atlas packed himself into as many silly places as possible. Cats are funny like that. He may or may not think that if he’s sitting on my bag, then I won’t be able to leave the apartment {sometimes I wish that were the case}. So, this was essentially my week in photographs.

Have a lovely weekend.
