For Christmas I made Ryan these chalkboard menu squares!

We’ve been making weekly menus for ourselves for a little while now. It makes grocery shopping so much faster and easier, and we get “refrigerator coma” less often { have you seen those commercials? }. I love knowing that all of our meals are pre-planned and that the ingredients are available and ready to be pulled together at any moment!

Making the squares was easy. I’d love for you to give it a try! Here’s what I did:

I went to a home improvement store and found my way to the lumber aisle. I looked for a thin, light piece of wood { if it’s too heavy it won’t hang easily } with a very smooth surface. Splintering or rough wood will make it harder for you to paint on the chalkboard, and then when you’re finished the surface will most likely still be pretty rough. I had an employee cut the large square into eight small pieces for me.

When I got home, I sanded down the corners so they were rounded. I sanded all of the sides as well to make them smoother before applying the paint. I applied three layers of chalkboard paint and let each layer dry for 24 hours. I  played it very safe, just in case, but if you’re short on time check the paint jar for details on the drying process.

After my chalkboard paint had had plenty of time to dry, I used regular acrylic paint to add the letters. The first square isn’t really necessary, I suppose, but I liked the look of two rows of four so I included it.

For mounting, I hot glued some slightly bent wire to the back of each square, then set them each on their own hooks. This way I can remove the boards easily every week when we update our menu!

I came home from work one day to find that Ryan had made and installed a chalk holder! I was delighted! He used some of the wood from an empty clementine box, and some hot glue to hold it all together. I had considered making some sort of a chalk holder before, but hadn’t settled on any good ideas, so I was really happy to see this when I came home that day. What a smartie!

You can customize your menu boards by choosing different colours of chalkboard paint, regular paint for the text, and even the font you decide to paint on. If you wanted to get really creative you could try differently shaped boards, or keep the menu on one large sheet of wood. For an even quicker DIY, just get a ready made chalkboard and paint on letters for the days of the week!

Have fun making your chalkboard menu! I’d love to see what you all come up with!

If you live in New England and you haven’t been to The Merchant Co. yet…

then you are sorely missing out. I love, love, love this shop. Essentially, it’s Etsy in a brick and mortar storefront form. The premise is, local handmade and vintage vendors purchase a table, display their goods, and the shop owners keep an eye on things while the vendors are away making more lovely stuff to sell!

The aesthetic is lovely. Comfy organic cottons, mid-century home decor, eerie taxidermy design, fancy flea market finds — they’ve all got a home here. For several years now, Ryan and I have been doing handmade Christmases. Really, they kind of evolved into handmade + vintage Christmases. We won’t buy anything new for someone as a gift because the excessive packaging, questionable company practices, and overwhelming carbon footprints that are by-products of the current consumer world makes us feel a little dirty when we give them our voting dollars. So instead we find unique pieces that are made by hand or treasures that have had many lives before, and gift these. And, The Merchant Company is probably going to be our first stop for Christmas shopping this year.

So, if you’re in Portland, or elsewhere in New England, you’ve simply got to set aside some time to check out this great little corner of the city. Have a peek at their website first, and then become a fan on facebook. You won’t be sorry!

There’s my advice for the day :)

Paint By Numbers, how can you go wrong?

Well, clearly it’s not the best, most profound, or most skillful art, but there is something about the aesthetic of a good ol’ paint by numbers painting that I find really appealing. Maybe it’s the muted colour pallet that they all seem to have, or the blotchiness of the simplified image, or the fact that someone somewhere along the line painstakingly (ha!) painted each and every section oh so carefully — I’m not sure –, but something about them just makes me fall in love.

Call me silly all you want, I’m still scouring all of my favourite thrift stores in search of the perfect paint by numbers to place on my walls. Just you wait, it’ll be darling.

Happy Wednesday!

One of my all time favourite annual events (right up there with Thanksgiving + the 4th of July!) is the summertime Picnic Music + Arts Festival!

SO. MUCH. FUN.

All handmade and vintage, it’s essentially Etsy in a park. Speaking of Etsy, this seller had a booth, and I can honestly tell you that her work is just as beautiful and perfect in person as it is in her photographs. I was thoroughly impressed.

Here are some of my other favourite displays, booths, and shots from our quick little visit:

I so wish that we could have spent more time! There was so much going on in the city between this and another festival, and the weather was gorgeous, but Ryan had to work and we had no money to spend.

Every year we say we’re going to plan better next year, ha! We’ll see how things are when the Winter Picnic rolls around.

Have a lovely afternoon!

xx. Julia

This image just speaks for itself, no?

A lovely lady we know has just opened up her Etsy shop, and this is a sample of the whimsical art that she has available. I’m so tempted to snatch up about five of her prints, tout de suite!

I’d love to have this posted near my bed, so as I fluttered off to dreamland, I could pretend I was aboard the little darling, headed for who-knows-where. The artist herself suggests maybe it’s here:

Please head over to check out her shop. The prints are ready to be shipped and would make the most beautiful gifts for housewarming, baby showers, or any other fanciful occasion. If you really love her work, she’s got a facebook fanpage, too!

Tell her I sent you ;)

xx. Julia

So today, in an effort to complete my 20 listings goal for February, I created two new items with the intention of adding them to my shop. Unfortunately, I wasn’t completely satisfied with the quality of my cupcake pin cushion since I threw it together pretty quickly and didn’t have any instructions to go by so I had to figure it out as I went. So, I’m finishing February off at 19 items (I’ll list my new painting first thing tomorrow) in an effort to spare you my unprofessional little stitches.

One of the reasons I failed today was because Mondays and Tuesdays are our “weekend” so Ryan and I try to spend most of our time on these days together. I rushed through the pin cushion so I could hang out with him sooner. We also had a meeting for the Portland Food Co-op which we are considering ownership in. We’ll see how that goes…

So, alas, here are the two little tidbits I made today:

Cupcake pin cushion and Ampersand Banner painting

The painting will be listed on Etsy tomorrow! Snatch it up first thing if you’re interested :)

The cupcake stand, of course, is listed here if you like it!

Have a great night, friends!

So, Ryan and I have decided that it just isn’t worth beating around the bush any longer. I want to have a profession that encourages my creativity, offers me the freedom to choose my own schedule, and gives me the sense of belonging and responsibility that I never got when I was working for someone else. So whether I’m destined to fail or succeed, I can’t keep holding off on my dream of being a shop owner, and I am now pouring myself into my shop whole heartedly.

With my dear partner’s blessing, I’ll be dropping one of my shifts at the group home, and focusing much more on the success of Jeeze, Julia! Since I’m still not sure what medium I like to work best in, or what people will be looking most to buy, for the first year or so I’ll just be listing everything I make and find, while I keep tabs on what seems to give me the most satisfaction to make, and is at the same time something that people want to buy.

I have a list going now of tasks to accomplish to help get things in order for business. Today I was so happy to create a fancy little sheet that I will use to track my expenses, my income, and the meager total of my business account (which currently is just a tin on top of our book shelf), and it will hopefully soon be enough to turn into an entire bank account. Here’s what the little darling looks like:

And just to give you a taste of the shop if you haven’t already moseyed on over, have a look at the items that are currently for sale. If you’re interested, I’d certainly encourage you to head that way and make a purchase. I will need all the help I can get in accomplishing my dream. ♥

Pals!

Since the first Picnic Music + Arts Festival, I have been simply enamored by the feel of the entire affair. Local crafters and vintage collectors come together to share space twice yearly in Portland, and the feeling is always jovial and pure (especially since the winter Picnic is smack dab in the middle of the Holiday season)! Due to past successes, this December the event will be two days long! Please, don’t miss out on this opportunity to have yourself photographed with a Yeti and get a huge chunk of your holiday shopping done all in the same spot. You may never get another chance…

I’ll see you there on Saturday, December 11th, or I won’t on Sunday, December 12th! Details are here!

Every day lately I’ve been so inspired. But the problem comes when I try to apply my vigor into creating something. I look all day long at blogs featuring the aesthetics of a nicely decorated home or the perfection of a great ensemble, and just want so very much to have the satisfaction of feeling so well-kept. But it’s so intimidating trying to figure out how to start.

SO, I’m setting a goal for myself. I’d like to make one thing each week. Just one! That’s not too hard, is it? At first I almost said one thing a day, but I’ve been working on one scarf for almost a year now…I think a week is at least a little more realistic. The one exception will be for the month of November. I’ll be focus firing my efforts on writing my second novel from the first to the last day of November. I don’t need anything else on my plate…

So to start I tried to replicate a virtual image that I saw on one of the blogs I follow. The post itself has lost itself somewhere in the internet realm, but the lady who created it calls herself Volume 25. She creates digital prints among other things. This is her image:

And I made it real. Instead of her logo I put on our TV a hand holding up three fingers. Actually, Ryan painted that part on. It was the illustration that he put on the card that he made me for our three year anniversary. I loved the clean and simple look of it so much that I had to immortalize it. As far as actually painting a vintage TV, I’m always so happy about the concept of turning trash into decor (upcycling at its finest). We are creating an incredible amount of e-waste these days and this is one simple way to keep a little more of it out of the landfills. I picked up the TV from Goodwill for $4.99 (with my discount it was even less!), but ideally one would use an old TV of their own rather than donating it or throwing it out. This particular piece actually had been outfitted to work with today’s cable boxes, but no one wants to bother anymore so it ended up stuck on a dusty Goodwill shelf for at least a few weeks before I took it home today (I’ve had my eye on it for awhile now…plus a real hamburger phone a la Juno).

Recently I’ve been having fits of inspiration. I say “fits” because I’m almost wild to find an outlet for all of the excitement & conductivity I feel. However, the problem I face (that I believe often plagues other imprecisely named “crafters/creators”), is that I find myself unaware of the proper direction to pursue. How can I get all of this passion out of me if I can’t pinpoint the right medium to use?

And so I trudge on, searching for some light to be shed upon something that I may not even yet be aware of, knowing only that I feel certain feelings because of certain images, sounds, or experiences. Here is some inspiration for you:

And, on a much more satisfying note, I just sold my later Jenny Lewis painting which has been adorning my own wall in anticipation of a final resting place since it was painted about two years ago. For an untrained painter, this is incredibly refreshing. With little direction in the medium, just the inspiration I mentioned previously, I was able to bring something into creation that another person wanted enough to pay money for. It’s a happy life that we live when we are able to make.
