Next stop: Otto!

Ready for the most brilliant business idea in the world? Specialty pizza by the slice open until a ridiculous hour. I must admit that we frequent this establishment {as do most of our friends} on our way home from dancing whenever we go out. Most of the time Ryan + I stay in, but when we do join the gang on the dance floor, Otto becomes an immediate necessity. However, even during the day we sometimes find its draw irresistible.

With reasonable prices, two convenient locations, and the option for delivery by bike, Otto really makes it easy to indulge in their pies. They always have eight different pizzas ready and waiting to be eaten, and the combinations are brilliant. My two favourites: cranberry, squash, and ricotta pizza {perfect for a taste of Thanksgiving any time throughout the year}, and tortellini pizza. That’s right; tortellini pizza. Oh, yes, they did.

Here’s the other beautiful thing: with a bar {Enzo} attached, you can order your pizza at the Otto counter, then shuffle on over to Enzo and wash that beauty down with a locally brewed beer. There’s seating here at the bar and at tables, as well as on the Otto side right by the window for some more great people watching, and on beautiful days like today, there are tables waiting outside!

We’ll miss Otto when we’re gone, but we’re happy to have enjoyed it as much as we have over the past couple of years. I am very picky about pizza, but this passes the test. It’s the only pizza I’ve ever craved, so that’s gotta say something. If you haven’t been here yet, you simply must visit their Congress Street at Forest Ave. location or their slightly larger spot on the East End about halfway up Munjoy Hill.

Have a slice for me!

xx.

P.s. Today is my best friend’s birthday! Happy birthday {again}, JC!

In honor of Portland, and our upcoming move, I’m starting a new feature.

Documenting my Favourite Local Haunts will be so bittersweet for me! We’ve lived in this city for four years, and in that time we’ve found some great little places. The Public Market House is definitely one of the best. Located right in the hub of town, Monument Square, this place is pretty much equidistant from everywhere else on the peninsula. Thus, it’s the perfect meeting spot for lunches, coffee dates, and it’s a great place to bum around on days off.

This place has two-floors worth of great resources. Downstairs, there’s a cheese counter with amazing imported choices, a section with fresh produce, the best selection of local microbrewed beers, fantastic wines, and meads. There’s also a station for Big Sky Bakery where you can take home some fresh bread. And the back section of the Market House offers one of the best little grocery areas within walking distance!

Upstairs, several local businesses have cafeteria-style booths and tables. There’s a coffee shop, a pizza place, a burrito spot, and even a quirky little soup joint {Kamasouptra!}, all of which pass my taste test! The mismatched tables and chairs lend a cozy Central Perk vibe to the establishment, and the view of Monument Square from the second floor makes for some excellent people watching. Although, I do miss giggling at Peanut Butter Jelly Time, a cereal + sandwich shop that used to be up there. What a brilliant idea for a business. I’m sad it didn’t stay longer!

Ryan + I first fell in love with the Public Market House a couple of years ago during NaNoWriMo. We needed a place to escape where we got a great wifi connection, had plenty of access to coffee, but weren’t distracted like we were at home. The Market House was the perfect place. We’d go here on our days off, split a french press, and type away at our novels until our fingers bled { I’m only exaggerating a little here }. The bevy of interesting people down below us made for great inspiration, but keeping a safe distance from it all in our cozy little nook upstairs made just the right environment. If you’re in the area, I hope you stop by for a visit from time to time to take our place in supporting this great local establishment.

We’ll miss it when we’re gone!

xx.

Here are more details from my swapping event:

The swap went off without a hitch! Our guests started arriving around 7 pm with bags full of clothing and accessories that they no longer wanted for themselves. These were pieces that either didn’t fit properly, weren’t worn very often, or had been loved a lot by their previous owners but were now ready for a change. With such a stylish crowd, there were plenty of gems ready to find new homes and I think everyone left happy at the end of the night. ModCloth sent a dress, a top, and a jacket to contribute, as well as two fantastic necklaces – all brand new – and I found myself drooling over several pairs of shoes that came in with our attendees.

While the bulk of the swappers sat down in the living room to enjoy some kettle corn, muddy buddies, cookies, and cocktails, both of us Julias went into the swap room { aka. my bedroom } to sort through the mounds of clothing. As we sorted, we could hear laughter and conversation pouring out of the living room along with the playlist that I created for the event.  I was really nervous since it was my first time hosting a swap, but when I heard those giggles I couldn’t help but smile.

In keeping with our mid-century camping theme, we organized each category of clothing — pants, tops, menswear, etc. —  into vintage suitcases and labeled them with brown paper and twine. We hung dresses and jackets on the rolling rack that Ryan and I made as one of our Valentine’s Day activities. Then only moments into the swapping action, ready-to-be-loved clothing was excitedly scattered about atop our Pendleton-esque wool blanket, and swappers were falling in love with new { to them } finds.

When we all had filled our totes to the brim, we sat down again in the living room for round two of snacks and drinks, and gabbed about our new swap scores. I had made some peter pan collars, girl scout ties, and even a scalloped collar to give away as free swag to my guests and this was the time to hand them out. There is nothing more satisfying that a full belly, good company, and a bag full of newly acquired clothing to style.

Over all, it was a wonderful night. The guys didn’t really seem as into it as us ladies  { we did have a small section for men! }, but that was fine because we needed all the space we could get for trying things on, stashing our already filled bags { as we went back in for more }, and tossing the pieces we had each decided against. Michelle has already done a write-up on the event for Swap.com and one on her own blog, as well! And Ashley showed off her finds, too! Make sure you have a peek at their perspectives before you dash away to your other favourite internet spots.

Would you host your own clothing swap?

xx.

P.s. Special thanks to ModCloth and Swap.com for sponsoring the event! It was a truly fantastic opportunity!

This is a good weekend.

Yesterday I was so flattered to see that my favourite fabric supplier made mention of me on her blog { check it out by clicking here! }. I have been buying fabrics from Dory for awhile now and have never been disappointed with what I’ve received when ordering. She offers so many organic options in her shop and ships them from Maine, so for me they’re a very environmentally responsible choice. If ever you’re looking for a quality fabric, a worthy good, if you will, I’d highly recommend her Etsy supply shop!

If you’re not a sewer you can still enjoy her beautiful work and honest approach to life by purchasing something that she has made by hand { like that fantastic hat in the top photo! } in her other Etsy shop, or by following her blogs! This one is dedicated to sewing related stuff, and this one for the behind the scenes details! I love her down to Earth perspective and appreciate everything she’s done for me in this past year.

Also, Dory is so generous that she is offering all of my readers 15% off her gorgeous organic fabrics from now until Sunday the 26th when you use the coupon code JEEZEJULIA! Go get some beautiful new material!

Have a lovely Sunday!

Snapshots from our week:

| highlights |

Last Saturday I thrifted with Chelsea + Samantha. I found this fun little hat { that I can’t stop wearing } and the next day a bird pooped on it. Ryan tells me this is good luck. I beg to differ.

We went on our first multiple couple date skipping right over a double date to a triple date! We met up at Novare Res for their Valentine’s Day beer + chocolate pairing, then came back up to our house for board games. I always really love walking around the city in jovial groups like we did on that night. It was, coincidentally, the night before Valentine’s Day, so we were keeping our eyes peeled for the bandit. We may actually have passed him { or her } unwittingly, we’re not sure. But we did happen to see the giant heart pictured hanging from the WCSH6 building.

On the 14th, it was heart pancakes for breakfast, heart gawking around town, then we each picked out a new album at the record store. For dinner I cooked since he does nearly all of our cooking and I wanted to give him a break. We had a cozy night in watching Anonymous and soaking our feet.

Today I heard the very first spring bird of the season. The temperature was 45 degrees fahrenheit, and I’m worried that crocuses are going to start accidentally popping up only to be frozen again before spring comes. It certainly was a nice thought, though, to hear the sounds of warmer weather and feel a warmer breeze. Spring is such a lovely season.

Happy Friday, all.

February 14th is my favourite day to be in Portland.

A lot of neat stuff happens in this city, especially for young people. But nothing trumps the fantastic feeling that swells up inside of me when I see the Bandit‘s hearts en mass. If ever you’re considering a trip to the biggest city in Maine, Valentine’s Day should be the day { in my humble opinion }.

This year, Ryan + I started our day off by sleeping in, then we stopped by our favourite local coffee shop to get something to sip while we walked around the city. I had to smile a little when I noticed that there was only one shop in the entire Old Port that didn’t have hearts on its window. This is a very artistic city with a huge movement toward supporting local and independent entrepreneurs. In fact, in the entire downtown area I can only think of three chain companies! The only place without hearts in its window this year happens to be a certain chain that is well known for ripping off ideas from the sort of “little guy” that makes up most of our fantastic city. So maybe I should say that on Valentine’s Day Portland shows its love for almost everyone. This is what we saw:

This year we’ve had hardly any snow. If you happen to look at my photos from last year you’ll certainly notice a difference. I’m always super disappointed when it doesn’t snow very much. I love New England for the most dramatic of its mood swings, but this warm winter thing doesn’t get my seal of approval. Just sayin’!

Happy Wednesday.

Do you have any plans in mind for your darling?

I have tons of plans! I really love Valentine’s Day so I’ve been brainstorming ways to make it last all year. There are seven projects I’ve come up with that I’m going to share with you over the next couple of weeks. Ryan + I get really into seasons and holidays and love celebrating together. I can’t wait to share our ideas with you!

To get you in gear for the upcoming Valentine’s Day features, I pulled together >> this playlist <<. Please enjoy it while you cook a delicious dinner, make a cutesy card to give away to your darling or your best friend, or while you celebrate the holiday in whatever way you so choose. I also wanted to share with you the story of Portland’s Valentine’s Day Bandit! This is one of the things that makes me love this holiday so much:

It was 1976 when the Valentine’s Day Bandit first struck our salty city by the sea. But unlike other bandits, he did not steal, damage, or otherwise harm any public property – instead he covered the city with a flurry of red paper hearts, spreading the love on Valentine’s Day. Since then, we’ve awoken every February the 14th to find our town once again plastered with hearts.

I can remember my first time experiencing this fond phenomenon (as I am not a native of Maine). I was charmed and delighted on my morning walk to work by the way that this city seemed to love me. Every shop window and lamp post burst forth with love; our city seemed to be splitting at the seams with admiration for its inhabitants.

For decades this tradition has continued. And as if covering an entire city in paper hearts was not task enough, the bandit has begun to add other towns across the United States to his route, notably: Montpelier, Vermont, and Boulder, Colorado. It seems he is taking a page from Santa’s book! One has to wonder, will our Portland hero make his way into the hearts of the rest of the world one loving city at a time?

And after all of these years, no one has figured out who the Bandit is! It’s one of our city’s great mysteries. Last year the Portland Fire Department showed their support for the Bandit by flying a red heart flag above their Congress Street station! Check out the Wikipedia article, and also my photos from last year, and a flickr set from another Portlander in 2006!

Or, come + visit this Valentine’s Day to see for yourself!

xx.

P.s. Don’t feel guilty buying yourself some little Valentine’s Day treats, either. Who says you can enjoy this holiday on your own? Make it special for yourself!

Another January in Maine.

We pass our days in the lull of winter by snuggling deep into our blankets and doing cozy things. We dress in layers every morning to try to keep out the cold.

Layers are the most important thing you can have here when the temperature drops. And wool. These will protect you when the chill leaks in through the window panes and tries to steal the warmth from your bones.

Tea, coffee, and other hot drinks are irreplaceable. And although I’d prefer my parents’ woodstove to the fake fire we have, it really does the trick when my toes are tingling with cold. If you should find your way to Maine in the winter, keep these tips in mind.

Stay warm!

I’ve got my layers + lace. I’m clearly ready for Christmas parties.

And if New England should decide it will snow, I’ll just hop inside quickly to switch into boots. I’ll throw a scarf around my neck, gloves on my paws, and a hat on my head — this is my plan.

Winter, bring it on.

Happy First Friday!

Other than spending four hours in the repair shop…

we had a lovely weekend. I did some thrifting, Ryan did some blacksmithing, and we tried our very best to suppress the urge to get all amped up on Christmas. It seems like everyone is getting ready for Christmas early this year, doesn’t it? I think it’s because of the early snow. And, there will be another 8-12 inches of the white stuff headed our way tonight!

So, until Friday on our drive back to Portland from my sister’s house {when we pop in the She + Him Christmas album!}, I’m still dressing and acting like it’s fall. Thanksgiving is the best day of the whole year and I absolutely can’t wait to enjoy it with my family.

By the way, has anyone else listened the She + Him Christmas album yet? I am really excited, but just have to make it through Thanksgiving first.

We were poking through shops this morning while we waited for the car to be finished in the shop, and when I stepped out of one store, the cold blast of air mingled with the holiday displays in the window, and I have to admit that I let out a little yip of excitement.

This Christmas is going to be the best!

Safe journey to all who are traveling!

xx.
