Happy Christmas!

This is what we have been up to lately. We’re spending time with friends, getting silly to Ryan + Rob’s songs, and wearing Santa suits. Every year I enjoy watching the process of the Rugg Brother Christmas song. If you missed their videosongs from 2010 and 2011 you can see them by clicking those links (It’s Christmas Again is my favourite so far, but all are very silly indeed!). I hope you are all settling in for a wonderful holiday and that these boys bring you a little joy!

Hope you’re well!

Our days are filled with comfort.

christmas couplesnowy brick buildingvintage christmaschristmas bikeI hope your days are filled with cheer and joy. Spend as much time as you can with family, and show your loved ones how much you care. This part of the year never neglects me – I always feel the urge to share little happinesses with those around me.

Happy Christmas,

I’ve never made a dress from scratch before.

I’ve done a lot of alterations, hemming, taking things in, changing necklines, straps, or sleeves, but this dress is the first one that I’ve ever made entirely myself. It was somewhat intimidating at first, but I managed it and I’m really excited.

The first second I set eyes upon Suzy Bishop’s darling dress, I knew I had to make it for myself. Knowing that I work best with deadlines, I decided to be Suzy for Halloween. I ordered the fabric, zipper, and a similar dress pattern a couple of weeks ago, and got to work on the dress this week. The pattern had to be altered a bit and added to, so, as is usual for me, I was right down to the wire. My Moonrise Kingdom costume was finished around noon on Saturday, right before I went in for work.

We had two parties last night to attend, and both were fantastic. The first was a big bonfire party hosted by Ryan’s and my boss. It was wonderful! Such a fun group of people with great costumes and fabulously fresh air. The second was our usual Halloween party  at Rob + Pam’s. We stayed for the night and today did a bevy of fun fall things like piling up leaves and burying ourselves. I love the smell of crisp and dying leaves.

Happy Sunday,

xx.

Halloween is approaching fast!

And it has certainly been on my mind. This year, as much as I dislike certain aspects of our apartment, I really love its location. We’re just outside the tiny center of town – only about a minute’s walk from everything – so I’m really crossing my fingers that we’ll have a little trick-or-treat traffic. I’ve got my candy display all ready to go, and I came up with some ideas for turning thrifted finds into candy-carriers on the big night. Now all I need is my costume! I have some ideas, but really better get crackin’. I have been planning on sewing my dress myself – we’ll see how that goes!

What will you be for Halloween?

Good afternoon, dears!

Happy Hugo‘s birthday to you! Yesterday my most recent post for Goodwill Industries International went live, and I simply had to share. There are several little peeks into our new apartment and some fun ideas about how to decorate with Christmas lights – even though it’s nearly summer. Personally, I think their subtle glow is perfect for warm months because it reminds me of the dreamy atmosphere of A MidSummer Night’s Dream {which I am inspired to reread nearly every summer}. But, you make the call in your own space.

Thanks for having a look!

Just a quick note today to say Happy Mother’s Day.

We’ll be heading over to my parents’ house today to work on our garden and share lots of food with my family. Enjoy your day, all of you Mommas out there. I hope the sun is shining as brilliantly where you are as it is here! Thanks also to my Grandmothers who helped to shape the lives that shaped mine. I’m very lucky to have had such strong women as role models and you inspire me every day to be thrifty, self-sufficient, and imaginative.

February 14th is my favourite day to be in Portland.

A lot of neat stuff happens in this city, especially for young people. But nothing trumps the fantastic feeling that swells up inside of me when I see the Bandit‘s hearts en mass. If ever you’re considering a trip to the biggest city in Maine, Valentine’s Day should be the day { in my humble opinion }.

This year, Ryan + I started our day off by sleeping in, then we stopped by our favourite local coffee shop to get something to sip while we walked around the city. I had to smile a little when I noticed that there was only one shop in the entire Old Port that didn’t have hearts on its window. This is a very artistic city with a huge movement toward supporting local and independent entrepreneurs. In fact, in the entire downtown area I can only think of three chain companies! The only place without hearts in its window this year happens to be a certain chain that is well known for ripping off ideas from the sort of “little guy” that makes up most of our fantastic city. So maybe I should say that on Valentine’s Day Portland shows its love for almost everyone. This is what we saw:

This year we’ve had hardly any snow. If you happen to look at my photos from last year you’ll certainly notice a difference. I’m always super disappointed when it doesn’t snow very much. I love New England for the most dramatic of its mood swings, but this warm winter thing doesn’t get my seal of approval. Just sayin’!

Happy Wednesday.

Make something together to display in your home!

You’ll spend time with one another while you make the item, and then for the rest of your lives together { or as long as you decide to keep it displayed } you’ll be reminded of that time you spent together and how productive you can be when you work together. Ryan + I had tons of fun yesterday making a rolling rack a la Kate via Design Sponge. It only took us a few minutes to put everything together — much longer to actually find all of the pieces in the hardware store!

More pictures to follow of the finished product! We just love the way that it turned out. But for now, we’re going to swing by Coffee By Design for some coffees, then ramble around the city looking at the bevy of valentines that the Bandit has left for us this year — so excited! This is my favourite thing about Portland. I absolutely can’t wait!

Also, Christine of the blog Metroboulottricot gave one of my Valentine’s Day ideas a try and shared her photos here. Check it out if you’re interested in seeing how someone else pulled together the monthly date envelopes idea! I have had lots of fun planning these 7 ways and I’m terribly flattered that some of you have given them a try. Thanks for sharing, Christine!

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Look up new movies for the year!

Mark on your calendar the opening dates of any that you know you’ll want to see together. We can’t wait for Moonrise Kingdom. First, it’s set in New England, our home sweet home. Next, it’s 1965 — same year as my novel { this year is also a current love of mine – what I wouldn’t give for a time machine! }. Then, the overall theme of the movie seems to be camp-y. So perfect for me! It was only a matter of time before Wes Anderson got it exactly right! He’s been hovering around my tastes for quite some time now.

I’m also very excited about Big Miracle, but I have a feeling Ryan could take that or leave it. Still, he’s a sweet guy and I’m sure that he’ll accompany me to see this. I’ll make sure to include plenty of movies that he’s interested in this year, too. This weekend I hope we’ll have a chance to look up release dates that will be coming out in 2012 and add some more to our calendar. Going to see a picture together is such a classic date idea, and it charms me to no end! It also doesn’t hurt that our local theatre still has that old time hollywood feel { the employees wear vests + bow ties }.

Only one more Valentine suggestion left!

xx.
