Happy Christmas!

This is what we have been up to lately. We’re spending time with friends, getting silly to Ryan + Rob’s songs, and wearing Santa suits. Every year I enjoy watching the process of the Rugg Brother Christmas song. If you missed their videosongs from 2010 and 2011 you can see them by clicking those links (It’s Christmas Again is my favourite so far, but all are very silly indeed!). I hope you are all settling in for a wonderful holiday and that these boys bring you a little joy!

Hope you’re well!

Corresponding with my pen-pal, Felicity (Flick for short) has been wonderful!

Shell of Kitty + Buck has worked so hard with Nat of Modern Buttercup to manage this letter exchange, and I’m so very grateful for the effort that’s been put in! My pen-pal is so much fun! We’re having a blast writing and decorating letters to send to one another and the ice-breakers that are posted for us to try are insanely fun.

One of the tasks we were given was to ask each other 10 questions. I love how Flick packaged up each of my questions separately! Each was so thoughtful and exciting to open. This project has been such an inspiration for me and although I haven’t had much time to dedicate to my letter writing, I try my very best!

When my brother was living in Germany, the letters we got from him had these red, white, and blue stripes around the edge. I was thrilled to see them grace the border of my first letter from Felicity. Somehow that’s what it took to really sunk in that she was on the other side of the Earth from me. Funny how little things like that can make such a huge impression. This is such a big world!

I’ve always loved getting mail, but I think the letters I get from her are my favourite. And even though we’re grown ups, I still think having a pen-pal does something really great for a lady. Check out the flickr page for snapshots of other Lovely Letters!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Tomorrow is the big day!

November 1st – let the noveling begin! Every year I look forward to National Novel Writing Month with such eagerness. The fairytales and characters that climb around inside my head throughout the whole year are appreciated, even encouraged, during November when I, along with thousands of other writers across the globe, type ’til my fingers bleed with the intention of writing 50,000 words in just 30 days. A novel in a month. It is quite the undertaking, but with the assistance of coffee, a comfy chair, and a little inspiration, it’s entirely possible. 2012 will be my fifth year participating and hopefully my fourth year of reaching that lofty goal. Keep up with my progress, or add me as a writing buddy here.

Won’t you join me in this crazy affair?

xx.

P.s. Here and here you can find out a little about the novel I wrote last year!

A town-wide yard sale? Holy brilliant!

That is right up my alley. Who thought of this concept? I want to meet them. Yesterday my little town filled up the park with tents, tables, and totally kitschy housewares. You can’t really tell from these photos because the park slopes downward toward the water, so most of the tents are out of view, but look at all of those cars! The turn-out was great. I just wish I had spent more time there!

Two police officers on duty in this sleepy New England town? That’s a big event! A month or so ago I tried to call in a dog that was roaming around in front of our apartment, thinking that it might be lost. Getting ahold of a police officer was actually incredibly difficult! I mean, I’m not dissing the town – if it were a real emergency I would have called 911 – it’s just such a sign of how rural this part of New Hampshire is. I called and the phone just rang and rang and rang. I hung up and called again a little while later and pressed some button to be sent to the dispatcher who then told me that the officer on duty was out on a call and he’d swing by my part of town after he’d finished up where he was. Charming?

I never see this many people in the center of town so I love the idea of a town-wide yard sale. It’s such a great way to bring the whole community together and made for some great thrift shopping! There was so much to see, and I barely got a chance to check it out because I was on my way into work. We did, however, catch some of the leftovers that were still around today, so that was worth it! Maybe next summer we’ll get to make an afternoon of it!

Have you ever heard of a town-wide yard sale?

You may recall my fascination with American motels.

And I must admit that I’m just as enamoured by Main Street America. There’s a simplicity and comfort in having one designated spot where shopfronts are all lined up, ready to serve the people of their town. Sadly, so many Main Streets that have thrived in the past are now crumbling and becoming forgotten in favor of malls and big box stores – the aisles of Target just aren’t the same to me as this friendly little Main Street made up of local peoples’ dream shops.

Main Streets are the next ghost towns, I’m afraid. This downtown in Laconia, New Hampshire still has a cobbler, two barbers, a bakery, a variety shop, a shoe store, several antique stores, a record store, a deli, and a soda shoppe. Sadly, the theatre has fallen into disrepair and its fate is in question. It’ll probably be the first to go.

I was 9 years old when my brother left to spend several years in Africa. Before he departed he took me to the Colonial to see Toy Story. I remember falling in love with the red velvet curtains, the balcony, and the classic ropes that separated lines at the ticket booth. This place was everything I could have dreamed of – now I’m sad for it.

I suppose nostalgia doesn’t really have a purpose, and I’m just hanging on to things of the past because I’m wishing for a simpler time. Still, I felt compelled to share this little Main Street, and hope that you appreciate yours {if it isn’t yet obsolete}. Supporting local business means you’re directly supporting your community and keeping the dollars you spend amongst your friends and neighbors. I love to do everything I can to frequent independent shops near me because local business is the livelihood of every community.

Happy Mom + Pop-ing!

You know that feeling when you find something from your childhood?

It’s sort of an affectionate familiarity, a vague comfort. This morning during our pancake breakfast {we may or may not have been watching cartoons}, I saw a thumbnail for the above cartoon in the related videos and felt so excited to click it. When I was little I had a tape of Disney shorts, this one included, that was a favourite. I watched it so many times that I’d be surprised if it was still in once piece. All these years later and I still find myself drawn towards percolators, old campers, and drives through the mountains.

What was your childhood favourite?

P.s. If you’re wondering what we’re like in the morning, Ryan’s the Mickey and I’m the Donald Duck.

I am so in love with the Etsy community.

Moreover, I’m in love with the people that are a part of it. The sellers (+ buyers!) who join Etsy are generous, thoughtful, and creative people who take pleasure in helping others succeed. I’ve never sensed a competition among sellers. In fact, there’s a common bond that seems to unite us all even if we are sharing a target audience. Everyone on Etsy knows that with the help of others, and if they help others, we will all have a chance for success.

Many of my friends and acquaintances have helped me during my recent shop opening. Dory, Ben, Laura, and plenty of other people responded kindly when I asked for advice and input on my brand and products. I’m so thankful to know them all.

Laura, for example, went out of her way to make a personalized banner for my shop, but didn’t stop there. We checked the mail yesterday and she had sent me the original hand painted couple that mascots my page, tucked inside one of her beautiful handmade cards, and along side a vintage sewing book that she had originally purchased for herself, but thought I might like – just outstanding.

I’m so happy to be a part of this community and I’m finding that I’m finally excited to wake up every day and go to work.

Tea for three, and three for tea.

This afternoon we had our friend Marsha over for a bit of a tea party. One is never too old or too busy for a little tea, I’d say. We sipped while we chatted and stayed out of the cold { it’s been snowing in tiny spurts today! }.

This week’s flower of choice: the tulip. Thanks for picking the prettiest bunch of them all, Ryan. Having fresh blooms inside always improves my mood as we patiently wait for the real spring to arrive and flowers go so nicely with tea, too, I would say.

Don’t you love this 1950s edition of Peter Pan? I thrifted it the other day from Goodwill and thought it fit quite nicely into our tablescape for this tea party. A bit of whimsy is never really out of place, is it?

We’re mid-week now, friends, so you’ve made it over the hump. If you need a little pick-you-up, might I suggest planning some time with friends and hot drinks and good music? It always makes me feel entirely refreshed.

Hang in there!

xx.
