I had a wonderful birthday yesterday.

Part of that was because so many people took the time to send some wishes my way. One reader even sent a birthday card in the mail — so thoughtful! Thank you all! I’ll be sending five of yesterday’s commenters a special package in the mail to say thanks for taking the time to leave their thoughts and best wishes. Four winners will have an email from me waiting in their inbox right now! Shelly of The Decayed Gentlewoman, please email me at Jeeze.Julia@gmail.com with your address so I can send the package your way, too. As soon as I receive your addresses, I’ll pop the packages in the mail!

Isn’t that negative strip brilliant? What a creative idea! So, birthday wishes were my first “thank you”. My second is for everyone who voted for me to take over the Sunset Hill House and share all of their deepest darkest secrets { like the recipe for their delicious wild blueberry pancakes or how they make their own maple syrup }. Thanks to you, I’ve won! They selected me on March 1st to come stay at their Inn for a week and show you the ins and outs of their amazing little hotel! I’m not sure when I’ll be visiting, but you can be sure that I’m already jumping up + down with excitement. Can’t wait to tell you more!

You’re all wonderful!

xx.

Further Down The River

I spent a long time trying to decide what to write today. I try to keep this space very positive, because I believe that life is too short and we should enjoy every minute of it trying to work past the unhappy, and toward the things that make us feel really good. So in the past I’ve never really mentioned the sad or unfortunate things that do happen in everyone’s life.

Today marks the 8 year anniversary of a close friend’s death, and it made me realize that even though it was a terrible, sad, unfortunate, miserable day for his family and friends then, and that the years since have been difficult and different, that I could still bring his memory to this space without also bringing negativity.

We should try our best to remember the ones we love with happiness and warmth, and hope that we can meet again further down the river. So it’s that thought that I hope to share today: love the ones you have, remember fondly the ones you’ve lost, and make each minute count, because they’re all too few.

Thank you all.

xx.

I’m getting ready to put my bike into storage for the winter

and it’s feeling a little bittersweet. To me, bikes are the epitome of summer — flying around with the wind in my hair, the sun on my shoulders, while humming some pretty little tune + feeling my Keds push the pedals around Portland (well, around the trails anyway, I’m too much of a wimp to ride in the streets!).

I’ve been enjoying the perks of fall for some time now, but last week we had to put down our storm windows for the winter, and today I’ve had the heater going all day, so I feel like it’s finally time to part with my bike until late next spring.

I’ll just have to remember that even though I’m sad to see my bike hide away for the winter, this means I can open up my box of winter clothes without feeling guilty! And, that it’s almost time for THANKSGIVING!

Is anyone else excited?

New Girl!

So, being a Zooey Deschanel fan, I’m wondering how her new show New Girl is!

I usually really like not having cable since it eliminates an obscene amount of distraction and obnoxious advertising. But every once in awhile there’s something I’d like to see on TV which really makes me question it. I can say that during high school I stared at that glowing screen for far too long, and I don’t really want to have that temptation back in my life, but the internet just doesn’t cut it when it comes to shows like this.

So, I must ask:

Did anyone get a chance to see the pilot last night? And, what did you think? And, can I possibly wait another week to see it, or will I perish for lack of spur-of-the-moment personal theme song writing and gratuitous Dirty Dancing viewings? You be the judge.

I suppose that now since I’ve scoured the internet looking for any random web host of the pilot episode and come up empty handed, and also asked for your help, maybe I can get on with my life and do something productive with my afternoon. I’ll just have to hold tight until next Wednesday…

Have a lovely one!

xx.

They say that Hurricane Irene is headed our way…

Sounds like the right time for some warm comfort foods to me! I’ll be enjoying breakfast for dinner tonight, and feeling the wind, and listening to the rain. I’ve got my wool tights on already (go August?), and wore a wool coat out to the store earlier, too.

Strange weather we’ve got here, alright.

Well, I’ll enjoy all the tea drinking and book reading that we’re doing over here at our house. I hope you’ve got the chance to do the same!

is hearing from everyone! Life is big and scary and busy and we never have the time I wish we could all have to get together and catch up. I’ve lived in several different locations throughout my 25 years, and I’ve met a ton of wonderful people. It’s nice to think that on this, my birthday, they all think of me (thanks, Facebook reminders!) and make the time to send a special birthday wish.

Today I’ve had the chance to chat with my parents, Ryan’s parents, my sister, and almost my brother (we’re currently in the middle of a game of phone tag), all of whom live back home in New Hampshire. I’ve gotten messages and comments from friends, and cards in the mail…it’s really the very best.

AND, the other awesome thing about birthdays, is that people out in the community treat you specially, too! Ryan made sure, as we wandered around our fantastic little city, that every place we stopped into knew that it was my birthday. Thanks to him, this morning I got special birthday sprinkles in my latte (thanks, CBD!)…and the whole thing was free! It’s been a lovely day, and I thank each and every one of you for being a part of it all.

Now if you’d please excuse me, Ryan and I are going to go eat our leftovers from Espo’s and watch Mrs. Doubtfire in our pjs. Have a great Pi Day everyone!

Last night was my birthday party! I feel extra special because I was able to share it with Aimee and Maia who are also birthday girls. I got special flower cupcakes for Maia and myself, and a vegan one for Aimee! We ate them off of cupcake stands, and shared biscotti, champaign with raspberries, and macaroons with our friends.

Everyone laughed, lounged, and had a lovely time, and although we didn’t get a whole lot of clear pictures (we were too busy having fun), I’d like to share with you what I do have.

Here goes!

I wore my Red Velvet dress, black floral tights, a brown cardigan, and booties from Find!

Marsha with a macaroon!

It rained again like last year! I was so shocked then that it was raining instead of snowing and this year it happened a second time. When I was little we would always have feet of snow to play in. I liked that much better…

The day I was born my parents had to rush to the hospital in the midst of a scary Nor’Easter, and I have one birthday memory where I was snowed in at my aunt’s house because my parents were both stuck at work! It’s wild how different the weather has felt these past few years…

Thanks to everyone who made my party special! And I hope that all of you readers are doing exceedingly well ♥

Thirsty For Themes

A lot of my favourite blogs have theme days. Keiko has Makeup Mondays, Etsy does How-Tuesdays, Elsie has 10 Things I Love Sundays, and I have decided these are all such great ideas!

So, at the risk of being called a copy cat, I’m going to…well, copy them. Beginning tomorrow, I will be posting my own “How-Tuesdays” and “Things I Love Thursdays” in an effort to fancy up my blog. We’ll start with that, and if I don’t feel too restricted, I may even add a few more theme days! I’ve been itching to create something that feels conclusive and structured, and since my shop is going to be all over the place for quite some time, I thought that having certain days where the reader can know what to expect might make my blog feel a little more put together.

Here’s a preview for tomorrow’s post. See you soon!

Before: Tacky Christmas Tin. After: Personalized Storage Parcel

Busy Bee!

Hey Pals!

My apologies for not being around so much this week. On Wednesday I worked from 7 am to 7 pm, Thursday and today I’ve worked 8 am to midnight both days! That means, the only time that I’ve had off I’ve been sleeping. So, sorry, dears! I’ll be back soon, don’t worry!

Good news, though, I’ve just gained another shift that will put my total worked hours per week up to 32! That means I’m almost full time and therefore won’t have to accept so many crazy relief shifts after this week! Yay!

That is all for now, I suppose. Hope you’re all doing well!

xx. Julia
