You know that feeling when you find something from your childhood?

It’s sort of an affectionate familiarity, a vague comfort. This morning during our pancake breakfast {we may or may not have been watching cartoons}, I saw a thumbnail for the above cartoon in the related videos and felt so excited to click it. When I was little I had a tape of Disney shorts, this one included, that was a favourite. I watched it so many times that I’d be surprised if it was still in once piece. All these years later and I still find myself drawn towards percolators, old campers, and drives through the mountains.

What was your childhood favourite?

P.s. If you’re wondering what we’re like in the morning, Ryan’s the Mickey and I’m the Donald Duck.

Hiding away in the basement of an historical Portland building lies Videoport.

This is your movie store, certainly not your parents’. And, unlike Blockbuster or Netflix, Videoport is not out to temporarily exchange the biggest box office hits for your dollars as though they are sex slaves. Instead, this independently owned movie rental place is staffed by experienced film geeks {I mean that in the best way possible} who aim to assist in developing your cinematic pallet.

It’s a place where it seems like you could name your top three favourite movies of all time that span multiple genres and, almost like magic, the employee assisting you would produce a film you’ve never heard of but that somehow has your favourite actor, a completely original theme, and a score that blows you away. I guess it’s sort of like the record store in High Fidelity, but for movies, and the employees are all much more tactful than Barry.

Looking at their fantastic selection, one might think it was hard to navigate amongst these shelves, but you’ll find the films so well organized by genre that this just isn’t a problem. I always head to the Classics section first, and Ryan usually goes to the middle aisle where Horror, Sci-Fi, and the Incredibly Strange sections {Yes, there’s a section for that} are lorded over by Frankenstein and his buddies Godzilla, and Obama — by the way, who knew he was a Trekkie?

You can rent kids’ movies for just a dollar every day except for on Fridays when they’re completely free, no paid rental necessary. As for the rest of the sections — there’s a free day for them, too! With any other rental, Middle Aisle Monday will award you a freebie from one of the six sections located in the center of the store. I like Tough + Triassic Tuesdays when I can take home the Shirley Maclaine movie of my choice for free so long as Ryan picks any other movie out to go with it. And for those of you who live outside of Portland, you can rent three movies now for an entire week and not have to worry about rushing back to town to drop them off! Even without using the daily deal, rentals are still dirt cheap.

If you need a bit of inspiration before making your choice, there’s usually some cult classic rolling on the TV located in the back corner of the store. They’ve got DVDs, VHS tapes, Blurays and tons of television shows covering every decade, so as long as you’ve got eyes and ears you’ll be satisfied. I honestly think that renting from Videoport will be the one thing that I miss the most about living in Portland. Having all of that culture right there at my fingertips is inexplicably exciting to me. So, if you live in Southern Maine and you haven’t been here yet, you are sorely missing out.

Happy renting!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever had a favourite actress.

But recently I’ve been really charmed by Shirley MacLaine’s older films. Somewhere between her pixie perfect looks, her sweet + subtle sound, and the way she can be both goofy and graceful is just so inspiring! She plays a convincing role whether she’s a nun or a harlot and her spunk is so refreshing. It’s fantastic to see an actress who doesn’t take herself too seriously.

She said in one interview that she is “just desperately in love with people”. That she loves knowing “what they’re feeling…what bothers them”, and trying to make things better for them. I love that perspective!

Who is your favourite actor or actress?

They just don’t make movies like they used to.

Whenever I finish watching a classic film like this one, I just feel so good. The entertainment industry seems incredibly different in the golden age, and I can’t get enough of their romance, style, and way of life. Plus, I’ve never before realized how much I love Shirley MacLaine…she’s so darling! Maybe even my new favourite actress? I’ll definitely be renting more of her movies in the near future.

Here’s the plot line in short: selfless C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) gives up his apartment nearly every night in order for his boss and the other higher ups to use it for their sexual escapades. At first it starts just as a favor, but the word spreads, and in order to compensate him his bosses start giving him raises! It seems like a good deal for Mr. Baxter until the head honcho of the company brings over the only girl that Baxter has his own eye on (Miss Shirley MacLaine), then carelessly leaves her in the dust when his wife comes back into town.

Baxter is then faced with several tough decisions and some really big responsibilities that he certainly didn’t ask for. But, I think you’ll be pleased with the outcome. Do have a look at this lovely little picture. I highly doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Oh, this is such a charming old film!

It’s a snapshot of a world that my generation knows nothing of; World War 2 era Washington D.C. The humour is certainly different from what we see in movies today. It’s simpler, but so chuckle-worthy. All of the characters felt a supreme responsibility to their country and countrymen, and each did their part respectively.

For Miss Connie Milligan, her duty was to open up her flat to share during a city-wide housing crisis. As you can imagine, our nation’s capital was a pretty hopping place at this point in time and she had previously been living in a two bedroom apartment all by herself.

But when she takes in a wily Mr. Benjamin Dingle (by the way, he won an Oscar for this part), everything spins out of control. Pretty soon she’s not even sure how many people are living under her roof, and some of them are men! What will the neighbors think?! Don’t worry, though, as is typical of a movie from this time period there is a happy ending (ie. a wedding), and all is well with the world — you know, other than that pesky war.

I saw this film several months ago on the shelves at VideoPort and it just begged me to pick it up. I had never heard of it before, and I hadn’t had it recommended, so I ignored it that night. But for months every time I went in to browse it was there staring me in the face! I have a big long list of movies I want to see, so if I don’t go in with something specific in mind, I’ll pick something from my ever-growing list. But week after week it just looked out at me from those shelves, and finally I decided to rent it thinking that I’d just have to make Ryan suffer through.

Surprisingly, he loved it (and so did I). The next week we went he told me that it had been so romantic to sit down and watch a classic together instead of our usual ’80s thriller, so he asked me to pick out another. I thought I’d go with Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Seems safe enough, right?

He fell asleep.

So, I guess as far as a typical guy is concerned, The More The Merrier is better than Breakfast At Tiffany’s. There’s your review, now go pick it up :)

And don’t forget the popcorn!

Ryan and I knew from the start that we didn’t want to get sucked into the world of cable (it truly is a world of its own).

There’s so much on TV that is interesting, and addicting, and intriguing, that we like to just leave it all alone. I know that when I had cable in my teen years, I wasted most of my day sitting in front of that glowing screen, and I refuse to let it get such a hold on me again!

That being said, we rent a lot of movies and we do enjoy a good sit-com as much as the next red blooded American couple. We just like to do things on our terms, so we usually pick one series at a time and follow it from beginning to end. Now we’re fresh out of ideas and having been away from the TV scene for so long, we need your help deciding what to watch next.

We started out with FRIENDS (of course) and it is just our taste. Call us boring or whatever you want, but that show was the best thing that happened to TV since Lucille Ball, and we still haven’t gotten over it.

We could only watch so much of it, though, before we knew the lines better than the actors did at the time, so we moved on to something else: King of Queens.

Say what you want about their abusive relationship, we find Doug + Carrie utterly hysterical. Not to mention, Arthur… Come on! That guy is pure genius. We quote him regularly! This show is definitely another home run hit in our household.

But it is here that we’ve come to an impasse. We only want to start shows that have ended so we can go at our own pace (ie. we’re too impatient to wait for their staggered releases). So we’re looking for suggestions for a good show to watch next.

So you tell me, what will be the next series to storm our sofa?!

I’m thinking Home Improvement?

I was thinking last night, as I watched the previews before Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 began, that this would be the last time I ever watched a Harry Potter movie on the big screen.

I thought about when I first heard that lovely tinkling little tune now so reminiscent of a magical world. It was ten years ago. An entire decade. I was sitting in the theatre and the lights dimmed and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone began rolling.

And last night as I waited to see the ending of it all play out before me, I thought about when the imagination of J.K. Rowling first opened up to me. My best friend, a profoundly avid reader, led me into a quiet room in her house. She said, “I’ve got to show you something.”

She shared a bedroom with her two younger sisters, so she sought the only quiet space where we could fall into the wizarding world without distraction — her parents’ bedroom. It was here that she told me of the grand adventure that had begun unfolding itself in front of her via those eggshell pages and the ebony lettering. Excitedly (I knew this was going to be something good), she opened up the very first book in the series and read to me the first page.

I was glued immediately, and she handed me the book. I remember seeing her in the hallway of our school the next day and running up to her. ”I just met Hermione!” I blurted out with childish enthusiasm. Only, we had no idea how to pronounce the name, so we called her Her-me-own. It wasn’t until the movies came out that we realized that wasn’t how it was supposed to sound.

I remember getting to page 100, and thinking that the stars next to that page number looked especially enchanting.

On the day that each subsequent book was released, my Dad or I would rush to pick it up (I got him hooked, too!). I’d read it as fast as I could then hand it over to him. Of course, Julia — my speed-reader best friend — had likely finished it on the same day that she lifted the cover, so she and I would gab immediately about how wonderful the story was — how captivating.

In college, I started pre-ordering my tickets and waiting in line at midnight to see the movies as they were released. It became a tradition that I looked forward to with an incredible lust. It was truly the epic of our time. And now it has come to a close.

I was such a different person way back then. I feel like maybe I wasn’t even myself at all. I was a product of my family and my environment, but I didn’t know anything about my self. I knew Harry Potter before I even knew myself.

And when I left The Nickelodeon theatre last night, I walked out as an adult woman who has a profession, a partner, who lives in her own apartment, who has pets that depend on her, who has a college degree, who owns her own car, who hasn’t even lived in the same State as her parents for several years.

I grew with the characters from a First Year and now the era has ended. It’s a strange, strange feeling…

I just had to share.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you need to. And if you haven’t read the books, it’s never too late to start.

Do the employees of Netflix have an extensive cinematic knowledge spanning generations? Will they gab with you about the ins and outs of your favourite movies, laugh with you at quotes, and suggest movies from the deepest darkest corners of the abysses that make up the history of moving pictures?

Just wondering!

Today, at the age of 79, surrounded by her family, Elizabeth Taylor passed away.

I joked this morning, right when I first heard, about how I wanted to watch National Velvet tonight to recall Elizabeth Taylor before she looked like Robert Smith (it’s something I’ve always thought, but never had the guts to say — until today). But as the day progresses, I feel more and more sad about our loss.

She was probably the last of the great actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age. She was an absolute legend. She could shoot a scene in one take, she had style and grace, and, rumor has it, she was born with a mutation that gave her an extra row of eyelashes, and soft, violet coloured eyes  – talk about being born for Hollywood! So though she may have gone a bit overboard with her hair and makeup in her adult years, I think she certainly earned the right to do so.

Here are some of my favourite shots of her, and if you haven’t seen her act yet, make a trip to your local video store and ask for some recommendations (keep those local gems in business — they’re a dying breed, too!).
