Happy Christmas!

This is what we have been up to lately. We’re spending time with friends, getting silly to Ryan + Rob’s songs, and wearing Santa suits. Every year I enjoy watching the process of the Rugg Brother Christmas song. If you missed their videosongs from 2010 and 2011 you can see them by clicking those links (It’s Christmas Again is my favourite so far, but all are very silly indeed!). I hope you are all settling in for a wonderful holiday and that these boys bring you a little joy!

Hope you’re well!

With the holiday season coming to a close…

I’m ready to share all of the wonderful gifts we made as a part of our handmade Christmas. Every year we have so much fun putting thought and time into our gifts, and these are some of the things that we made this season:

My burly blacksmith man made most of our holiday gifts this year { thanks for that, by the way, Ryan! }. He hammered away at piping hot metals, and made the above works of art – letter openers, grill forks, towel racks, S hooks, bottle openers, etc. I was thoroughly impressed, and so were our family and friends! It feels good to be with such a manly man.

For the remainder of our list, I whipped up the following:

For my Mom | I printed a photo of Ryan + I, one of my sister and her husband, and one of my brother with his wife and children. I pasted these to brown paper squares, stretched pretty fabric in embroidery hoops, then secured the photos in the center by stitching them in place with thick thread. I think they’ll look just lovely on my parents’ living room walls.

For Sarah | My photo printer got quite the work out this year! I printed out these little memories of time spent with my niece and nephew and stuck them onto magnetic sheeting for my sister-in-law. LG { the little lady in the photos } happily stuck them up on their fridge at home, and I hear she quite liked rearranging them. Perhaps she has a future in design?

For LG | Speaking of my niece, I made her this mini-tote for her holiday gift! When I was little, my brother used to call me the bag lady because I was always toting things around. It seemed only appropriate that I pass the torch! Now he gets to see his daughter fill up her bags for no good reason just as I used to.

For Caleb | My brother and his wife showed us the Put A Bird On It skit from Portlandia, so when I saw this mobile I thought of them. Conveniently, they have a little in need of a mobile! Thus, a gift was born. This is the only gift that we gave that neither Ryan nor I made ourselves, however, it was handmade right here in Maine by Lindy!

That’s it for Part 1 of our holiday gift giving — the things that we gave to others. Next week I’ll share all of the things that Ryan + I made or tracked down for each other. There are also a few more that I have made but have yet to be given! I hope to share those as well in the future.

Stay tuned!

xx.

This is what all of my days have looked like lately.

I’m doing a lot of staying at home + crafting since Christmas is so close! Somehow I got way behind this year, so I’m struggling to get everything done. As I type, I’m multitasking with another gift – phew! I probably won’t finish everything in time, but I’m lucky that the people in my life understand my tendency to be a bit behind.

Thanks for having a look at my day!

Durrrrrrr!

Do you know what I forgot to do? I forgot to give you all the free mp3 download of The Rugg Brothers’ first original Christmas song! I can be a real goon sometimes. Anyway, I hope you’re all doing quite well today, and that you’ll enjoy this song by my Mr. and his very best friend. It was so much fun to make this video last year, and also, to make their new video for this year’s song!

Download “It’s Christmas Again” here!

Yesterday I took a photo an hour, and I’ll be sharing them all with you tomorrow. I’m still pretty swamped with Christmas gift making {as fun as it is}, so bear with me. Listen to The Rugg Brothers on repeat until I’m back, maybe?

Have a great night!

What a week we’ve had!

I’ve been incredibly busy this week with my last minute preparations for Christmas. With less than a week left, I still have a lot to do. Tomorrow I’ll mail the last of my projects that are traveling, and then I’ll be able to focus on the rest of the things that I’m doing for those I’m spending the holiday with. I still feel so far behind!

We did take a break from all of our making to visit some friends in New Hampshire. Ryan + Rob {aka. The Rugg Brothers} were able to write a quick song and make an accompanying video while we ladies chatted about their greatest Christmas gift this year — baby number 2!

I’m sorry I’ve been absent more than usual lately. After Christmas I can promise I’ll be back in full swing. Until then, enjoy this new video song from the boys. I hope you love it!

Cheers and best wishes!

xx.

Here’s the holiday card I’d send you if I could!

Some of you will be receiving our other Christmas cards in the mail, but for those of you whose addresses I don’t have, I hope this will do! With this “card”, I wish you the happiest of holidays and the merriest of days leading up to them. We, here in Portland, have been quite jolly these past few days. We had a mini-photoshoot the other night for this card. Ryan is so patient with me.

After getting some nice photos {and some very silly ones}, we poured ourselves some eggnog, put on my Christmas playlist, and decorated the tree! This is our fifth Christmas together and I am so thankful for all of the memories we’ve already made together, and all of those that are yet to come. I am so happy to cuddle up on the couch with you, Ryan, and chat about our favourite childhood recollections in the glow of our newly decorated tree. This is a new favourite tradition of mine.

You may notice on our tree, some very dirty ornaments that we inherited from Ryan’s parents. His aunt was given these for her first Christmas tree on her own. Since she had none before that, a whole lot were picked up from a discount store, and it turned out that they all had something just not quite right about them. Some look like they’re doing explicit things to one another, others have their feet on backwards, or they’re missing noses.

We love putting these crazy ornaments up among our pretty vintage baubles, and giggling over the strange mix that we have. I feel like that’s part of the fun part of decorating a Christmas tree — collecting lots of different pieces, all with their own stories attached.

The moment after the decorating is finished, when the overhead lights go out, and the twinkle lights are plugged in, is just magical. Our tree is so perfect this year — small, but lovely. I am not sure if I’ve ever been quite as charmed with a tree as I am with this one. I’m completely in love.

I wish you all the happiest of holidays, no matter which you celebrate.

xx.

Sooooo…we broke down and got a tree.

Last week, when I mentioned my aversion to cutting down a tree every year, Molly left a super helpful {and persuasive} link to Christmas tree facts in a comment. Here’s the page if you’re interested. I read through a lot of the facts listed there, hoping to feel better about our holiday tradition, and when I found the following tidbit, I was completely convinced:

“Artificial trees will last for six years in your home, but for centuries in a landfill.”

There are plenty of Christmas trees planted every year on farms, and we only cut down a portion of them since each tree needs to grow for several years before it’s tall enough to be harvested. And once discarded, a real tree will begin composting and nourish the Earth again. Plastic, on the other hand, will take hundreds of years to decompose. And thanks to this realization, I will no longer feel badly for decorating my house with a fancy fir every December.

Of course, we could still do an alternative Christmas tree like this one, this one, or my lights-in-a-carboy thing, but what’s the fun in that when we could have a real one with a real Christmas smell?

So tonight, while we listen to my vintage Christmas playlist, we’ll trim our tree together. I’m so excited! Hugo clearly is, too. Can’t you tell?

Thanks for clearing that up, Molly!

I’ve been thinking a lot about “the Modern Gentleman” lately.

With Christmas and Ryan’s birthday coming up, I’ve been doing a lot of brainstorming about the types of things that he would like, and also what he needs. Plus, a friend of his also recently asked me to help him decorate his bachelor pad {which he shares with another equally gent-like friend} and I’ve really enjoyed the creativity that this new perspective offers.

The Modern Gentleman, to me, is a man who enjoys aesthetics, but not as much as he appreciates function. He prepares for any situation to arise with style and grace. I’m happy to share some of my recent imaginings of this fellow with you, in hopes that maybe it’ll help you find a holiday gift for a certain Sir in your life who fits this description. So without further ado,

here are some suggestions for the modern gentleman in your life:

1 | A necktie or bow tie: The one pictured above is great, but a bow tie would do just as well. If your gent is anything like mine, he loves the character that comes with vintage + handmade, so skip the department store ties and go for something unique.

2 | A book store gift certificate or a pile of books: Any gentleman worth his salt is well-read. By passing on some of your favourites, or encouraging his next trip to the bookstore, you’ll be giving him something to look forward to in the evening when he retires to his study. You can really never go wrong with books.

3 | A stationery set: As avid appreciators of a simpler time, the modern gents that I know all love to write fine letters. Letter writing is a lost art these days, but not so to the man whom you’re shopping for! Give him a simple set with a classic look to it and he’ll add you to his pen pal list.

4 | Utilitarian boots: Although he usually prefers to dress up, a guy like this is certainly no stranger to practical footwear. Especially if he has grown up in New England like Ryan + company. He won’t be surprised at all to see that you have given him a pair of fine leather boots, in fact, he’ll shock you with how classy he can make them when paired with his slacks and vest!

5 | Mid-Century Modern anything: He’s probably charmed by the sleek and smooth look of Mid-Century Modern home decor, so anything in this style will please him. If you’re on a tight budget, check craigslist and thrift stores for stools and side tables, but if you have a bit more to spend, splurging on an Eames chair or a fab full length couch would be his dream come true!

6 | A flask: When he does opt for a man night out, he’ll need something subtle to contain his whiskey. Enter: the flask. It’s compact, functional, and an excellent accessory.

7 | A newspaper subscription: This one would be a good gift from someone close to him {girlfriend, close friend, parent} who knows his political leanings and such. You wouldn’t want to get a subscription to a very conservative news source for a man who is actually quite liberal, or vice versa. But, if you happen to know where your guy stands, he’ll benefit greatly from this gift. Gents are always well informed.

8 | A nice scarf: Don’t judge the man in the scarf. Chances are, he can pull it off better than you can. Anyway, that’s how it seems to me. The guys who have the guts to wear scarves usually wear them very well. Gents are stylish fellows, and scarves are very practical objects! It only makes sense that the two should go together!

9 | A record player: When he kicks back to read those books you got him, he’ll probably want something playing softly in the background. Also, he’ll need a way to practice his waltz. The record player has got him covered under both circumstances. Check Craigslist and thrift stores again for cheap finds!

10 | A gift basket of microbrews: He’ll be able to appreciate your region even more if you help him taste what it has to offer. Guys typically love beer, and trying new microbrews will allow him to pick out tiny little details and nuances in each bottle that will take him from consumer to connoisseur in no time.

The best part about buying for a modern gentleman, though, is that he’s probably incredibly appreciative. No matter what you settle on for a gift this year, I’m sure he’ll be able to tell that it’s coming straight from your heart, and he’ll therefore be very thankful.

Happy holidays!

xx.

Saturdays are lovely, aren’t they?

I spent the whole day today working away like a busy little Christmas elf. I picked up all of the crafting supplies I will need for all of the projects I’ll be doing as presents. I also finished a gift for my niece, and wrapped up several of Ryan’s! That’s a lot of work for one day!

We haven’t purchased a tree yet, so this is how we’re displaying our lights and presents. Every year I struggle with whether or not I want to buy a tree. I love them. I grew up with fresh, real trees, so I have a really hard time getting into the Christmas spirit without that spruce-y scent. But to think that every single year a tree is cut down for every household that celebrates Christmas is pretty sad.

Tree hugger concerns aside, we are not going to be around for Christmas Eve or Christmas day, so it seems like there may not be a reason. Yet, still, I might wear Ryan down so we can get a tree {he’s the strong one}. He did come up with a fun little way to display the cards we receive!

I came home from work on Friday to see our first Christmas card of the season hanging up proudly! Ryan took three strands of yarn — one green, one red, and one white — and twisted them all together to then clipped up a bunch of clothes pins!

I’ll have to share another photo closer to Christmas when it’s all filled up! Until then, please enjoy “It’s Christmas Again” the holiday song that The Rugg Brothers {aka. Ryan + Rob} wrote last year! I’m in the video, too! We had so much fun drinking eggnog, being silly, and getting excited about Christmas together. We’ll be with them next weekend to make this year’s video song and get into the groove of the holidays together!

Happy weekend!

xx.
