our week in snapshots:

highlights

The nights this week have been cold. I mean, so cold that we’ve had to close the windows, the heat has kicked on, and the cats follow us around the house trying to snuggle at every moment. Autumn is trying its best to sneak its way in, but summer puts up a good fight, still, during the day. Labor Day is this coming Monday which around here means the tourists go home. When the tourists go home, that’s the end of the summer. At least I still have my crickets to keep me company!

On Monday we got to see Sunnyfield Bakery and help out with baking some bread! Ryan helps a little with part of the delivery route, and so they invited us to come inside the bakery and see how things are done. Lost somewhere among the trees (it took us quite awhile and several circles and phone calls to finally find the place!) an old New England house looks out on the bakery’s namesake fields with sprawling mountains in the distance. A small crew (just three people!) spread out the dough, section it off, weighed it on an old balance scale, pat it into the right shape and pop it in their big brick oven to bake. While Ryan + I helped, we all chatted about book binding, blacksmithing, and how working in this setting definitely beats an office job. On the way home from the bakery we stopped off at one of my all time favourite farms to pick up some fresh ears of corn for dinner.

At home, we’ve been making some comfort foods for the cool nights. Ryan, of course, springs for pizza, but I opt for quiche on my nights to cook. This week I made my best crust yet and I can’t wait to try it out on pies in the upcoming months. I think my Grandma might be proud.

Have a great weekend,

xx.

our last two weeks in snapshots:

highlights

The most wonderful thing about these last two weeks, by far, was the Goodwill Summer Conference in Miami Beach. It was unbelievable. For three days I was surrounded by people who, like myself, are in love with thrifting, addicted to making, and always looking for new ways to share ideas. We spent the conference swapping DIYs and sharing funny thrift store stories in the swelteringly hot Florida weather. Now I know why everyone cringed when I told them I was going to Miami in August! I mean, it gets hot in New England in the summer, but not that hot – it was so humid that walking outside felt like swimming.

Still, staying in the Art Deco district forced me to venture outside. Just from my window in the Loews hotel I could see hundreds of beautiful vintage signs glittering in fancy scripts. The architecture of the buildings was a dream, and these towering structures came in every color imaginable! It was absolutely fantastic. The clothing style, however, was a different story. I guess Ryan + I stuck out like two sore thumbs because people kept asking us where we were from! Even amongst the other tourists we truly did look out of place.

My presentation went swimmingly {Of course, the sangria they served us didn’t hurt my comfort level up there}! I was nervous every second right up until I was introduced and stepped out onto the stage. But being up on there with Evette and Jenna – two of the other Goodwill bloggers – felt natural and fun. They were both sweet and supportive and so interesting! I’d love it if the whole group of us, behind the scenes people, too, could see each other much more often.

Of course, the trip home wasn’t quite as wonderful. There are no direct flights from Miami to New Hampshire {go figure!}, so we had a scheduled stop in Atlanta. However, Georgia was seeing incredible storms, so our flight to was delayed…causing us to miss our flight from. So, we spent the night in the world’s busiest airport, caught a very early morning flight up to Michigan {I know, right?}, waited for our final flight back to the Shire which was, again, delayed due to weather. Since our return we’ve been getting back to normal life and trying to catch up on everything that we missed. We came home to find our garden bursting with fresh veggies ready to be picked, and snacked ourselves silly while we plunked little snap peas, green beans, and cucumbers into our colander. We swapped palms for pines, took Atlas to the vet – much to his dismay – and tried our very best to battle the moisture in this basement apartment of ours. But, enough about me…

How was your week?

Our week in snapshots:

highlights

It’s funny how some weeks fly by and others really drag. This week, for me, seemed to slow to a snail’s pace – but in a good way. We had five days in a row where our only responsibility was to enjoy ourselves in one of the most beautiful places in the world with all of the small town New England charm that we love and {mostly} beautiful weather. It was such a treat. The whole vacation sort of felt like a reward for making the move back to New Hampshire. We’ve been here for over a month now, so most everything is settled into place {with the exception of some apartment organization} so the timing felt appropriate. It was a great experience and I’m happy to have started my summer off as I did.

Of course, coming back to the real world after a vacation is always difficult, and this time was no exception. I’m looking forward to more days full of sunshine and fresh air, and hope that we can take advantage of being outside much more now that summer is here. In fact, Ryan + I started his “initiation” check list. Things he must do now that he lives in the Lakes Region. Things like rope swing into the lake, night hike up a mountain, BBQ for several nights in a row, etc. We’ll get started on this tout de suite.

Happy Friday,

xx.

Summer has hit us hard here in the Lakes Region {if you couldn’t tell from all of the beach snapshots}! It’s been almost 100° F and muggy, so I was lucky to have some time at Camp where the water was cool and the grill was hot – two of my very favourite things. I did have to pay my dues and by spending hours in the garden weeding previous to my dip. But I was quite happy to see that our radishes and lettuce are both ready to be picked! We’ll be away until Tuesday, so I’m hoping my parents help themselves lest those babies just turn into compost!

It is rather comical that a momma turkey and her littluns have taken it upon themselves to enjoy some of our spoils when we’re not around. Several times now when we’ve arrived, we’ve had to chase them from our food supply and shake our fingers at them. Momma turkey does not take kindly to this type of discipline and has actually charged at Ryan in her fury! She’s pretty lucky that we’re vegetarians, otherwise I can imagine another farmer serving his family Thanksgiving dinner in the beginning of summer to pay her back for her antics.

Now Ryan + I are gearing up for our trip to Sunset Hill House! I’ll be sharing our adventures with you every day and you can like them on facebook to make sure that you don’t miss a beat seeing as I’ll be linking every blog post on their facebook page! I do need your help, though, with choosing my next book to read. I’m pretty close to polishing off Mrs. Dalloway, and I’m not sure where to go next. We’ll surely have plenty of time to spend between pages while we’re away, so I’ll be bringing a few options with me for when I’ve finished my current read. I’d love your opinion! {Check out my full reading list here.}

Can’t wait to share our vacation with you!

Our week in snapshots:

Our garden produced its first food this week! Although our radishes are tiny, they’re quite tasty! Of course, we only pulled up two so that the rest could get bigger + better, but it’s a wonderful feeling to taste something that you have grown from a seed. After weeding and planting a few new radishes, my pal Shadow and I sniffed around the yard for wild strawberries. Our trip to the garden certainly was fruitful this week!

I found some lovely little things while thrifting this week, too! I’ll share them with you soon for sure. I’m just waiting for some vintage pieces to come in from Etsy so they won’t feel left out! One item that we found at our local Goodwill is the darling scale pictured above. I’ve been wanting one for awhile so I can weigh my packages before sending them out, and this is just exactly my taste!

The weather has been ideal lately, so I’ve been spending as much time outside as possible. Just in the past two days I’ve taken trips to the park, to ice cream stands, and to the lake. My favourite ♥. Alas, I’ve done a lot of play and only a little work, so it’s time to head back into the studio to restock some items that are now for sale at Sunflower Natural Foods in Laconia, New Hampshire! Go have a look if you’re in the area!

I hope you’re all well!

Our week in snapshots:

It’s been almost a month since I’ve opened my Etsy shop and I am happy {and a little surprised} with the results! Before I closed, I was making far fewer sales than I am now, and I felt much less focused – it was a messy combination. Now, I feel as though I have a specific look + feel for my shop that is translating into satisfied customers. This is exactly what I was hoping for and my fingers are crossed that things continue in this direction!

We’ve been renting a lot of movies from the library lately. In Portland, it was our habit to frequent VideoPort at least once a week {sometimes more!} and each pick out one movie to watch together. They had their daily deals that would always send us home with one free movie, so we loved the ritual of our browsing there. We miss VideoPort a lot. A lot, a lot. But our humble little library does have its fair share of classics so we’re working our way through those. And, in so doing, I came to the realization that one simply cannot be in a bad mood after watching Say Anything. That Lloyd Dobler’s spirit is infectious, and this movie just works its way a little further up my favourites list every time I see it.

I’ve got a few new items in the works for my shop, too! Keep an out out for new solid colours and lacy collars! Can’t wait to share – these are some of my favourites yet!

Have  a great weekend.

Our week in snapshots:

For the first time in my adult life I was actually able to go to a yard sale – for me that is a personal victory. I love searching for treasures in piles of castoffs, but I’ve worked weekends for the past five or so years, and although I’m still putting in regular hours on weekends, they’re not as many and they’re more spread out so it’s yard sales, here I come! Don’t worry, thrift stores, I’m still in love with you, too.

We went out for our first ice cream cone of the season – this is a big thing in my culture. To grow up in a tourist destination means that the whole region is asleep from October to May and when it is finally breathed to life again at the beginning of the summer there is a great feeling of celebration. Thus, my days have been filled with daisies and dreaming and doing things I’ve longed to do for months now. A much needed day on the beach with a book is the next thing I’m planning to do with my free time. Then, summer will really be here.

Happy summer!

I’m getting used to the view from our bedroom window: pine trees. This is, ironically, something I really missed when I lived in the Pinecone + Chickadee State. Funny how things like that work. Speaking of which, we took the Maine plates off of our car this week and updated them with fresh New Hampshire ones. Slowly but surely we are updating the things that need updating and making ourselves at home again.

I am definitely getting used to seeing my best friend more often. The other day I spent the whole day at her house mostly chatting, but we also got a little bit of our respective projects done, and it felt good to do some of that with someone else around. Usually when I work on my Etsy or blogging stuff I’m alone while Ryan is at work. Such a nice change.

We got to plant part of our garden on Sunday with a little help from our footsy-pajamaed niece, LG. She’s 3 now and other than getting distracted by little critters who came across our planting path, she was of great assistance dropping one little seed in every hole we made, then carefully covering it up with her tiny hands. She did have a bit of an accident later in the night, so she asked my sister and I if she could borrow some of our clothes {that we haven’t worn in 20+ years} that my Mom still had hanging around. She left in a vintage half-apron of my grandmother’s – bare bum in the back -, a sunhat that belonged to a doll, a tank top that my sister wore as a little, and a sweatshirt that said “JULIA” in puff paint across the front {one of my favourite pieces of art work at that age}. She  has such a wonderful little personality.

Have a wonderful weekend,

xx.

Our week in snapshots:

So I was expecting that in this post one of the highlights would be my shop reopening. Instead, it’s the silliness that is signing up for fast internet in a rural setting. I’m kidding myself here, right? Our internet was supposed to be turned on on the 9th so I could open up my Etsy shop on the 10th. Instead, it’s the morning of the 11th, and the web is still touch and go. It’s okay for little things like twitter and facebook, but uploading huge images in bulk is not something that bad internet is good for. So I’m going to stop setting deadlines for the shop opening and just sing it from a mountain top {I certainly do have my choice of these!} when I am finally ready to go.

Although the weather has been gray and rainy for about two weeks straight now, there have been some breaks in the clouds that allowed us to rototill our garden. Since our new apartment is right on a river + in the center of town, there isn’t any space to plant here, so we’re using some of my parents’ land. My Mom was telling me about one spring when I was very little {I can’t remember it at all, but she says I was about three or four} where my sister and I planted the entire family garden by ourselves. It was a beautiful day, and for some reason that was all we needed. She showed us how to dig holes and put in the seeds or seedlings, then cover them up again, and the two of us did the entire thing. It’s that same plot of land that Ryan + I are calling ours this summer and while he turned the Earth there last weekend I couldn’t believe how big that spot was and I’m excited to see how much it yields for us. This will be a wonderful summer.

Happy Friday.

Our week in snapshots:

highlights

This week brought sunshine in mass amounts – definitely appreciated, New England, thanks! We were able to leave the house without coats on and open our windows for a couple of hours at a time. This means that we did a lot of walking around town and making excuses to be outside. We made another trip back to New Hampshire for some job interviews on Ryan’s end and spent the night at my parents’ house in the woods. We arrived Monday night after the stars had all come up, and as soon as we got out of the car we just stood in the driveway marveling at the sky. Away from the city lights, we felt like we could see the entire universe and Ryan proclaimed that there were so many stars in the sky that he almost couldn’t see any of them. I can’t wait to call that region home again.

I made some new little creatures for the Merchant Company this week {photo on the top right}, aren’t they adorable? The design is by the owner of the shop, Dunja, and she picked the most remarkable vintage fabrics to make them with. I’m so happy that I got to help bring these little cuties to life! Each one is entirely unique with different combinations of colours and textures, and the eyes are all hand stitched in. So darling!

Have a wonderful weekend!

xx.
