To fill the mistletoe void in our holiday collection, I made this!

If you don’t have any mistletoe in your home, you should make some, too. It’s such a fun tradition for holiday parties and a very cute excuse for a kiss with the one you love.

All you need is a little time and these few supplies:

1 | Green felt or fleece - Fleece + felt don’t fray so there’s no sewing!

2 | Red ribbon or yarn – One piece for the bow + one with which to hang the bunch.

3 | Fine scissors - These little ones gave me more accurate control.

4 | Corsage pins - We’ll improvise the little white berries!

5 | Wire cutters – To snip off the sharp part of the corsage pin and bend the edge in.

It’s simple, no? I hope this little mistletoe bunch can be recreated  by you and added to your own holiday decor collection. Homemade touches are the best ways to make your house a home.

Have a wonderful night!

xx.

I’ve been thinking a lot about “the Modern Gentleman” lately.

With Christmas and Ryan’s birthday coming up, I’ve been doing a lot of brainstorming about the types of things that he would like, and also what he needs. Plus, a friend of his also recently asked me to help him decorate his bachelor pad {which he shares with another equally gent-like friend} and I’ve really enjoyed the creativity that this new perspective offers.

The Modern Gentleman, to me, is a man who enjoys aesthetics, but not as much as he appreciates function. He prepares for any situation to arise with style and grace. I’m happy to share some of my recent imaginings of this fellow with you, in hopes that maybe it’ll help you find a holiday gift for a certain Sir in your life who fits this description. So without further ado,

here are some suggestions for the modern gentleman in your life:

1 | A necktie or bow tie: The one pictured above is great, but a bow tie would do just as well. If your gent is anything like mine, he loves the character that comes with vintage + handmade, so skip the department store ties and go for something unique.

2 | A book store gift certificate or a pile of books: Any gentleman worth his salt is well-read. By passing on some of your favourites, or encouraging his next trip to the bookstore, you’ll be giving him something to look forward to in the evening when he retires to his study. You can really never go wrong with books.

3 | A stationery set: As avid appreciators of a simpler time, the modern gents that I know all love to write fine letters. Letter writing is a lost art these days, but not so to the man whom you’re shopping for! Give him a simple set with a classic look to it and he’ll add you to his pen pal list.

4 | Utilitarian boots: Although he usually prefers to dress up, a guy like this is certainly no stranger to practical footwear. Especially if he has grown up in New England like Ryan + company. He won’t be surprised at all to see that you have given him a pair of fine leather boots, in fact, he’ll shock you with how classy he can make them when paired with his slacks and vest!

5 | Mid-Century Modern anything: He’s probably charmed by the sleek and smooth look of Mid-Century Modern home decor, so anything in this style will please him. If you’re on a tight budget, check craigslist and thrift stores for stools and side tables, but if you have a bit more to spend, splurging on an Eames chair or a fab full length couch would be his dream come true!

6 | A flask: When he does opt for a man night out, he’ll need something subtle to contain his whiskey. Enter: the flask. It’s compact, functional, and an excellent accessory.

7 | A newspaper subscription: This one would be a good gift from someone close to him {girlfriend, close friend, parent} who knows his political leanings and such. You wouldn’t want to get a subscription to a very conservative news source for a man who is actually quite liberal, or vice versa. But, if you happen to know where your guy stands, he’ll benefit greatly from this gift. Gents are always well informed.

8 | A nice scarf: Don’t judge the man in the scarf. Chances are, he can pull it off better than you can. Anyway, that’s how it seems to me. The guys who have the guts to wear scarves usually wear them very well. Gents are stylish fellows, and scarves are very practical objects! It only makes sense that the two should go together!

9 | A record player: When he kicks back to read those books you got him, he’ll probably want something playing softly in the background. Also, he’ll need a way to practice his waltz. The record player has got him covered under both circumstances. Check Craigslist and thrift stores again for cheap finds!

10 | A gift basket of microbrews: He’ll be able to appreciate your region even more if you help him taste what it has to offer. Guys typically love beer, and trying new microbrews will allow him to pick out tiny little details and nuances in each bottle that will take him from consumer to connoisseur in no time.

The best part about buying for a modern gentleman, though, is that he’s probably incredibly appreciative. No matter what you settle on for a gift this year, I’m sure he’ll be able to tell that it’s coming straight from your heart, and he’ll therefore be very thankful.

Happy holidays!

Ah, Christmas is nearing!

We’ve made out all of our Christmas cards and polished off two cartons of eggnog {small ones, and over the course of two weeks — not as gross as it sounds}. We’ve also watched many of our favourite Christmas movie classics.  This season is already shaping up to be one of the best!

Since we do handmade Christmases, we have to get started early! We also have to dedicate a lot more of our time for holiday preparations, but that makes us really happy. Ryan + I really get jazzed on the holidays. Our favourite thing is sitting down and wrapping up all of the gifts we’ve made with our own two hands, cutting cute tags, and rolling out the ribbon — it’s our jam.

This year for Christmas cards, we decided to keep it simple. I found vintage Christmas images that I liked online, then printed them out with my photo printer. I printed them small, two per photo sheet, then we cut them out and deco-taped them to the front of a halved and folded piece of nice paper.

Personalizing these cards was the fun part. We chose certain images for certain people, and picked the tape colour to match it best. I loved drawing little photo frames on the fronts of the envelopes.

We made these envelopes ourselves using paper bags! I’ll share a tutorial soon with the exact instructions, but it’s not hard at all so I’m sure you could figure it out. I kind of made Ryan do all of the envelope tracing and cutting because I was too excited about making the fancy script and such — ha!

These are the holidays so far in our house!

xx.

P.s. Here’s a fun free Christmas song from Chalk + Numbers! You never can have too many Christmas songs, can you?

Everyone knows a cat lady.

I, myself, am one. So, who better to tell you what ladies like myself enjoy?

Here are some suggestions for the cat lady in your life:

1 | A cat cap: What could be more fun than dressing up your pets? If they’re outdoor cats then this adorable little hat would actually serve a purpose {ridiculous as it may be}. If they’re indoor, then it’s just for looks. Still, it would be a super fun present for a cat lady.

2 | A lint Remover: You learn quickly when you have a cat that you’re in their world. To a cat, everything in sight is fair game. Your ear buds are a toy, your glass of water is now theirs, and your favourite sweater is their bed. I give you the most practical gift a cat owner could ever get — the fur remover.

3 | A cat mug: Chances are, your cat-mom likes coffee. Or tea. Or at least hot cocoa. Cat ladies enjoy staying in the comfort of their own home, and to give them something to do while they pet their furry purrers, how about gifting them a lovely mug. Oh, and they usually appreciate kitsch, too, so feel free to go slightly over the top.

4 | A crossword puzzle book: You could make this one yourself! Collect the crossword puzzles from your local newspaper and sort them into a little book. You can decorate it as you see fit! I often get stuck under my cats…it sounds like a weird thing to happen, but if you have cats then you’ll understand. Here’s what happens: You’re watching a movie and a little one comes over, gets comfy on your lap, and falls asleep. Then, of course, the movie ends and you’re just stuck. You don’t want to move and disturb your adorable little fluff ball so you reach over to the coffee table and pick up a crossword puzzle.

5 | A big bag: Encourage your friend to spend a night out by giving her a cute new purse to show off. It’s a nice gift for any lady, and worst case scenario, this one’s big enough to fit a cat in! You never know what kinds of situations you’ll get yourself into as a pet owner.

6 | Pet portraits: It’s as simple as that. They love their cats, this much we know. Plus, don’t you think animals always look hysterical when they’re dressed in people clothes? No? Still just me? Well, I promise your cat lady friend will appreciate it, too.

7 | A new collar: A handy little gift to give. It’s nice to have an extra collar on hand in case one breaks or is outgrown!

8 | A kitty harness: To go with your new collar, of course! Now your cat lady doesn’t even need to leave her babies behind — they can keep her company on walks or when she reads in the park.

9 | Cat eye glasses: Why not, right? When they’re out of the house, others won’t know that they’re cat ladies (so long as they’re using their lint removers, that is). So why not give them an identifying feature. A lot of people are wearing false glasses just for the look, these days. The vintage style of the glasses says, “Hey, I appreciate a simpler time”. Coincidentally, it also says “I identify with cats.” What could be more perfect?

10 | A kitty calendar: To keep track of vet appointments and all of those feline birthdays. This one’s travel sized, so she can keep it handy right in that purse you got her!

Hope your cat lady friend loves these!

xx.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

This is my all time favourite holiday, and I am so happy that I’ll be spending it at home with all of my family. I hope that your holiday is warm and wonderful, and that you enjoy some great food and company. Now, here I go getting all sentimental — I’m thankful for literally everything that I can think of: My kitties, my Dear, my family, my friends, the warm cozy place in which I spend my time, my readers, the opportunities I’ve had this year, and New England.

Speaking of New England, I’m bringing this Marlboro Pie {sometimes called Marlborough Boston Pie} to my sister’s house, along with a yummy green bean recipe. I was really excited to try the pie, because it’s a traditional New England harvest dessert that was really popular in the 1800s, and was a must for Thanksgivings during that time.  Here’s hoping it doesn’t taste gross, or that I didn’t mess it all up, ha!

Don’t forget, if you need any advice about hosting a fall themed dinner party {aka Thanksgiving}, I’m your gal! Travel safely if you’re going somewhere.

Gobble, gobble, + see you on Friday!

xx.

We all know about Black Friday, right?

You get out of bed at an unimaginable hour, drag yourself to a public venue, wait in line in the freezing cold, then run between departments ripping products Made in China out of other people’s sweaty hands, all to save a couple of bucks. Sounds fun to me?

I know some people who have gotten some amazing deals on electronics and brand name clothing, and have saved hundreds of dollars while crossing off their entire Christmas lists — kudos for that hard work! And, I have got to say that my sister and cousin have become professionals in this area — they scout out the stores a few days in advance and make a game plan so they get all of the stuff that’s most important to them. That’s smart shopping. If you’re going to participate in Black Friday, that is the way to do it, and I wish you well. However, it’s just a bit too much stress with not enough pay off for me personally.

If it’s not really your thing, either, then you can join me on Small Business Saturday — the following day. On this day we’ll keep our money in the local economy by purchasing from independent shops in our area. It’s much less stress, and your purchases will be more unique. I guess I’d rather have my time and my sanity than a surplus of money, call me crazy.

See you in the Old Port?

xx.

P.s. If you’re in Portland, you should take the horse drawn carriage into the Old Port from Monument Square. That’s my idea of holiday shopping!

We’re not playing the music yet.

And we’re not watching the movies yet either. But I’d be lying to you if I said we didn’t spend a significant amount of time yesterday brainstorming Christmas ideas. Ryan + I got jazzed on coffee, then sat down with paper and a pen to make a list of the people we wanted to make gifts for this year, and what we thought they might like.

Now we’re all ready to start working on our handmade Christmas! I’m really excited to share with you all of the projects that we’re going to be working on for gifts. I also have a couple of super cute ideas for holiday decor {I’ll make sure I share them with you when the time is right}.

Here are some of my favourite handmade/vintage holiday gifts from last year:

Any great ideas for your holiday crafting this season?

Buy Handmade Video from Etsy. “I buy handmade to fill the emptiness.”

Who’s on board?

Ryan & I have been gearing up for a handmade holiday season this year. If you’re not familiar with the handmade movement, it’s a reaction to a whole bunch of things. The superficiality in our society (expecting lots of purchased gifts), the economic state (it’s hard to spend money when you don’t have money), the environmental state (remember reduce, reuse, recycle?), these are all great reasons to pledge a handmade holiday season, but if not these, then how about just spending time & thought on the perfect gifts for your loved ones. Better than buying them something, tailor every gift specifically to each person. While you’re making the gift, you’ll find that you can’t keep them off of your mind! It’s the perfect way to dedicate yourself to making sure those who are important to you have a fantastically heart-felt holiday. Repurposed gifts have so much personality & individual history, so take unused materials & upcycle them to be something new!

But keep in mind that making everything by hand will take more time than simply buying stuff. So start planning & crafting now! If you find that the going gets tough, then you can succumb to purchasing gifts handmade by others– that’s just as good. Etsy is a great place to look for these. You can find anything you should want. Promise. & take the handmade pledge if you need some incentive!
