Hey, thrifty ladies {and gents}!

Last night craft-fever hit me hard! While Ryan relaxed and settled down for the night I found myself getting all in a tizzy over recreating a thrifted lampshade. We bought this lamp and shade separately from Goodwill months ago, but it’s never looked exactly the way I wanted it to until now that I’ve added my own vintage fabric to it. Here’s how you can update an old lamp, too:

You’ll need a lamp {duh!}, scissors, fabric, hem tape or double sided tape, measuring tape, and a marking tool. You could also add some cute rick-rack or stitches to it depending on how much time you want to spend and how detailed you want the shade to be! I first thought I might do some stitching, but didn’t want to get holed up in my studio for too long on a night off, so I sprung for the tape.

First step: Strip the lampshade. When we bought ours it had ribbon hot glued to it from the previous owner. We took this off immediately, but the glue itself has been there ever since. Depending on your shade, you may choose also to take the fabric off entirely and have just the wire frame, but since our shade was white we knew it wouldn’t make a difference to the look at the end of the project, so we left it on.To make sure that you cut the right amount of fabric, measure the height of your lampshade as well as the diameter and write down both of your measurements. Then, add one inch to the height and one inch to the diameter so you’ll have space to fold over the edges.

Mark this new measurement on the wrong side {the side that won’t be showing when the project is finished} of your fabric, then snip, snip, snip!

Add the hem tape to the top and bottom edges of your fabric keeping in mind that you added an inch of fabric {a 1/2 inch for the top + a 1/2 inch for the bottom} for these adjustments. Folding the raw edge in will make the project look nice + neat.

Next you’ll fold both edges in a half inch and press down on the tape to stick them in place. Your fabric should now measure from top to bottom the same as the lampshade does. Almost there!

Add a strip of tape up the lampshade to hold on one of the sides of the fabric.

Add tape to the bottom and top edge of the shade, then, making sure your fabric is smooth, turn the lamp and attach as you go.

When you get to the end, remember that you added an inch in the measurement for overlap, so you can fold the fabric under as you stick it in place with the double-sided tape. Et voila!

I’d love to see how yours come out if you decide to give this project a try! It’s a simple way to spruce up your home and to dig into that gorgeous fabric stash I know you have hiding away.

Have a wonderful night!

We do a lot of little updates to our apartment.

To me, a home is more than just where you hang your hat. It should be a place where you feel comfortable, happy, and for creative individuals like Ryan + I  – it should be a place where you become inspired. Although our flat is not our dream home yet, we find that living in a space that is well thought out and beautiful helps to enhance our creativity throughout the day. When our apartment is messy, we feel messy. When it is clean and pretty, we feel ready for anything! We don’t plan on living here forever, but while we’re here we want to make the very best of it. If you, too, want to turn your current quarters into a more inspiring space, here are 5 tips on how to do just that:

Make a list of the things that you already love. This could include anything from the hardwood floor to the throw pillows on your couch, or even a certain colour scheme that you already have going. I love the little decor items that we have scattered about our apartment like this vintage breakfast tray, our handmade cloth napkins, and little rustic touches like a pinecone + feathers.

Study your list for similarities and prominent features. Are there recurring colours, shapes, or styles? Is there anything on this list that has obvious accessories? For example: I love the modern shape of our coffee table so I might try to reflect this in future purchases by choosing side tables, lamps, or chairs that have a similar form or are from the mid-century era.

Make a pinboard on Pinterest of images that inspire you. This could include everything from photos of other peoples’ homes that you would love to live in to colour palettes that tickle your fancy. Work from your “likes” list in collecting similar images, but pin anything that gives you that excited design feeling! I have several pinboards going for specific rooms so that when I decide to make some changes to that space I already have visuals of what I like and what works, to inspire me.

Make a second list, but this time include all of the things you dislike about your space. Be specific. I often say that I hate our entire bathroom, but that’s not exactly true. I like the wall colour and the layout alright, but I dislike the tiles, the cabinet under the sink, the fixtures, and the unprofessional little “fixes” that have been done to our very old building over the years, many of which are visible in the bathroom. Try to pinpoint details in this list so you’ll have a more realistic idea of what you want to change.

Brainstorm ways to update the dislikes list to be more like the loves list. You are looking for fluidity here and melding the changes you make with your established tastes will help you match your changes to reflect the style in the rest of the space. Make sure you write down all of the ideas you have for updates, but only pick one task at a time to tackle. Making small progress will give you the confidence to keep going and seeing each little task completed will empower you as well!

Most of all, have fun getting creative!

What better article to style in February than a cardigan?

It’s been awhile since the three of us have each styled one piece of clothing to share with you, but Liz, Chelsea, + I are back to show how we wore this comfy little mustard sweater! We prefaced this little photo shoot with lots of thrifting { I’ll share my finds this weekend! }, lunch together at our favourite Asian restaurant, and a surprise visit with a childhood friend of mine. Over all, the day was fantastic.

Here are our photos:

This is pretty much the ideal cardigan, I’d say. It’s a pop of colour, a comfy knit, and a very easy style to wear so the possibilities are endless! I have a similar cardigan that I wear all the time. It seems like it’s just the perfect combination of everything and it can be dressed up or dressed down according to your mood and your plans for the day.

| Julia |

I mixed the sweater with a lacy top, and wool trousers. The textures of each layer are a really neat mix when they’re all pulled together. Although the look is professional and classic { especially with my newly thrifted hat! }, it is still so, so, so comfortable! I could wear this to work on one of my office days! Another plus? It incorporates three of my favourite things: lockets, layers, + lace.

| Chelsea |

This is my favourite combination that we came up with in this round. The horizontal lines on her top and the vertical ones in the pleats make for a very structured aesthetic, but the way that the sweater overlaps both really pulls them together! So fun and feminine! This was the perfect look for our thrifting adventure earlier in the day — it was functional and totally adorable.

 | Liz |

Not everyone can pull off a turban, but I think Liz nailed it with this ensemble! She brought in some more colour with her copper corduroys and in the scarf that she fashioned  atop her head. This would be a great outfit to wear on a light hike through the woods since it’s so practical, but still really fun. Don’t forget to invite me, Liz!

So that’s what we wore this past Saturday! Have you noticed that our background keeps changing? We rotate around our apartments depending on whose item it is that we’re swapping each time! Since this is Chelsea’s cardigan, we took photos in her room. Let me show you a few more photos of the space. You’ll be as in love with it as I am!

She has a great eye for design, no? It must be because she’s a photographer. She’s also an excellent thrifter! Several of these display items were purchased on our shopping trips together. I really think she may be my good luck charm because I always find the best things when we go looking together. Don’t you love her space?

By the way, how would you wear this cardigan?

Make something together to display in your home!

You’ll spend time with one another while you make the item, and then for the rest of your lives together { or as long as you decide to keep it displayed } you’ll be reminded of that time you spent together and how productive you can be when you work together. Ryan + I had tons of fun yesterday making a rolling rack a la Kate via Design Sponge. It only took us a few minutes to put everything together — much longer to actually find all of the pieces in the hardware store!

More pictures to follow of the finished product! We just love the way that it turned out. But for now, we’re going to swing by Coffee By Design for some coffees, then ramble around the city looking at the bevy of valentines that the Bandit has left for us this year — so excited! This is my favourite thing about Portland. I absolutely can’t wait!

Also, Christine of the blog Metroboulottricot gave one of my Valentine’s Day ideas a try and shared her photos here. Check it out if you’re interested in seeing how someone else pulled together the monthly date envelopes idea! I have had lots of fun planning these 7 ways and I’m terribly flattered that some of you have given them a try. Thanks for sharing, Christine!

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

We redo our weekly menu every Monday.

It has worked out incredibly well for us! We always have food, know what’s for dinner, and we stay { for the most part } within budget. Here are some things that I’ve learned about menu planning since we began doing it last year. I highly recommend it. Having your meals planned ahead of the time really cuts down on refrigerator coma and unsatisfying dinners.

| 7 tips for menu making |

Pick one day of the week for menu making + grocery shopping. We do ours on Mondays. We wake up, have breakfast, then pull down our menu boards and re-do them for the week. I write down the meals on the menu, and Ryan writes down the ingredients we’ll need on the shopping list. Immediately after, he runs out to the store to stock up!

Before you pick meals for the week, look through your pantry + fridge to see what you already have to work with. This will cut down on your grocery bill and also ensure that your food doesn’t spoil or pile up in your pantry unused. If you have leftovers from last week or a surplus of rice, you can plan meals around these and spend less at the store.

Consider which days you’ll be tired from a long day, or have lots of time and energy. Place quick meals or very involved meals accordingly so you are more likely to stick to the planned menu. If Wednesdays are a long day for you with work, classes, or other plans, you’re probably not going to have the time or energy to make a huge meal from scratch, so pick something simple that you can whip together without a lot of trouble.

Use up the fresh stuff in the first few days’ meals so it doesn’t have a chance to go bad. Save pasta, lentils, take-out { yes, you can put that on your menu! } or anything of this sort for later in the week. We’ve definitely purchased greens for a meal on Saturday, but they’re wilted by Thursday. That doesn’t make much sense, does it?

Make extra food at dinner to take for lunch the next day! We do this almost every night. Then we really only have to plan a couple of lunches for the week, and the rest are just leftovers from a dinner. We pack it up after we finish dinner and the food has had time to cool. In the morning we just grab it and go!

Make a cute menu board to inspire you to plan! Here’s how we made ours. I had so much fun coming up with the design last Christmas and always feel excited to plan each week. It helps to keep our lives in order and also looks pretty on our wall! Having a menu board is such a relief because I never have to wonder what’s for dinner!

Balance each meal when you’re planning, not when you’re cooking. Taking the time to realize what you’re missing ahead of time will ensure that you are getting all of the nourishment you actually need. I made this image of the well-balanced plate to demonstrate how much of each food group adults should be getting. Compare your dinner plate to this one. Are you getting all of your nutrients? Make sure that each meal has enough proteins, whole grains, and fruits/veggies. It’s so important!

If you have more tips, add them in the comments below!

Look up new movies for the year!

Mark on your calendar the opening dates of any that you know you’ll want to see together. We can’t wait for Moonrise Kingdom. First, it’s set in New England, our home sweet home. Next, it’s 1965 — same year as my novel { this year is also a current love of mine – what I wouldn’t give for a time machine! }. Then, the overall theme of the movie seems to be camp-y. So perfect for me! It was only a matter of time before Wes Anderson got it exactly right! He’s been hovering around my tastes for quite some time now.

I’m also very excited about Big Miracle, but I have a feeling Ryan could take that or leave it. Still, he’s a sweet guy and I’m sure that he’ll accompany me to see this. I’ll make sure to include plenty of movies that he’s interested in this year, too. This weekend I hope we’ll have a chance to look up release dates that will be coming out in 2012 and add some more to our calendar. Going to see a picture together is such a classic date idea, and it charms me to no end! It also doesn’t hurt that our local theatre still has that old time hollywood feel { the employees wear vests + bow ties }.

Only one more Valentine suggestion left!

No. 5!

Make more mixtapes { yes, still! }

Sure, mixtapes may have been a huge hit amongst teens in the ’80s, but the mix — not necessarily in tape form — is an excellent way to show someone how you feel about them. These days a CD or a playlist is probably more relevant. Either way, it’s the thought that counts! To some this may seem cliche, but you don’t have to make a big deal about it. I make mixes all the time for us to listen to in the car or while we’re bumming around the house. Making an effort to scout out potential new favourite songs for the one you love is a sweet and thoughtful way to show them 1. that you know them + pay attention to their tastes, and 2. that you care.

I made a Valentine’s Day playlist packed with sweet + romantic songs. I can’t wait to listen to it with my Mr. on Tuesday! The best part about having a distinct song or playlist that you hear often during a certain period of time is that you start to associate the two. Wouldn’t it be lovely if your honey popped in the mix you made them later on in the year and happily reflected upon the time you’d spent together this February? Choose songs that remind you of them and plenty of new gems you know they’ll like! Happy mix making!

Check back for two more ways!

There’s no rule that says your fridge face has to look messy.

I love the look of a structured aesthetic and where better to practice this than the refrigerator? It’s a focal point of every kitchen, so I thought I’d work a little at redoing mine. Today I spent some time decorating clothespins and adding a magnetic strip to the back so I could further organize my kitchen space. This was a great way to use up some of my tiny fabric scraps that are leftovers from various sewing projects, and it hardly took any time at all.

I tried a couple of different methods out. The one that worked the best was washi tape. It’s super simple to apply and sticks well without any drying time. You can get lots of different patterns and colours online, on Etsy, or in paper supply stores. I’ve had mine for about a year now and I use it all the time.

Since I really wanted to vary my clothespins and use up some of my fabric scraps, I also mixed some glue with a little bit of water to make a sort of a mod podge with which to apply some fabric. This was a little more trying since it took drying time and more attention to detail, but I’m pleased with the overall look of the clothespins.

As for the magnetic backing. I had a big sheet of it left over from when I made polaroid images into magnets, so I traced the shape of the clothespin onto that and trimmed it carefully. Some magnetic sheets are self-adhesive, but mine was not so I affixed it quickly with hot glue.

I love the versatility of these magnetic clips! So far I’ve got some photos, a post card, and a nightly checklist hanging with them, but I’m excited to do more in the future! I thought about changing out images, newspaper clippings, and lists as needed { even according to the seasons! }. I know they’re really just the same as regular old magnets, but somehow they seem like a lot more fun!

I also considered mod podge-ing magazine clippings onto the clothespins, but never got around to it. If you decide to give it a try, I’d love to see what you come up with. I bet there are plenty of amazing variations to be thought up, too! Have fun making your house a home.

Good night, all!

xx.
