There’s nothing like the feeling…

of crossing something off a list. And just now I got to strike right through Mrs. Dalloway on my reading list! I read bits and pieces of the novel in college, and studied it then, too, but without managing to pass through every page. Now, thankfully, I’ve given it a more thorough read and found that the fluidity of this novel is astounding – especially considering the number of characters whose perspectives we dove into, and the corners of London that we toured around with them.

The structure was admirable; beginning the book when Mrs. Dalloway descends the staircase from her room to greet the day, and finishing up when she prepares to engage in her last conversations of that same day before climbing the stairs again. Every page in between is alight with fluttering and flourishing language, but grounded with an occasional simple sentence for emphasis.

It was a portrait of sorts. Seeing as to know anyone “one must seek out the people who completed them; even the places”, we cannot know Clarissa Dalloway without meeting those people from her past + present and the places, too, that have made her who she is. And so in this book we explore the city, its people, and their memories {within a day!} – all of which connect to our leading lady. Well done, Virginia, well done.

Next up is Peter Pan!

We do a lot of little updates to our apartment.

To me, a home is more than just where you hang your hat. It should be a place where you feel comfortable, happy, and for creative individuals like Ryan + I  – it should be a place where you become inspired. Although our flat is not our dream home yet, we find that living in a space that is well thought out and beautiful helps to enhance our creativity throughout the day. When our apartment is messy, we feel messy. When it is clean and pretty, we feel ready for anything! We don’t plan on living here forever, but while we’re here we want to make the very best of it. If you, too, want to turn your current quarters into a more inspiring space, here are 5 tips on how to do just that:

Make a list of the things that you already love. This could include anything from the hardwood floor to the throw pillows on your couch, or even a certain colour scheme that you already have going. I love the little decor items that we have scattered about our apartment like this vintage breakfast tray, our handmade cloth napkins, and little rustic touches like a pinecone + feathers.

Study your list for similarities and prominent features. Are there recurring colours, shapes, or styles? Is there anything on this list that has obvious accessories? For example: I love the modern shape of our coffee table so I might try to reflect this in future purchases by choosing side tables, lamps, or chairs that have a similar form or are from the mid-century era.

Make a pinboard on Pinterest of images that inspire you. This could include everything from photos of other peoples’ homes that you would love to live in to colour palettes that tickle your fancy. Work from your “likes” list in collecting similar images, but pin anything that gives you that excited design feeling! I have several pinboards going for specific rooms so that when I decide to make some changes to that space I already have visuals of what I like and what works, to inspire me.

Make a second list, but this time include all of the things you dislike about your space. Be specific. I often say that I hate our entire bathroom, but that’s not exactly true. I like the wall colour and the layout alright, but I dislike the tiles, the cabinet under the sink, the fixtures, and the unprofessional little “fixes” that have been done to our very old building over the years, many of which are visible in the bathroom. Try to pinpoint details in this list so you’ll have a more realistic idea of what you want to change.

Brainstorm ways to update the dislikes list to be more like the loves list. You are looking for fluidity here and melding the changes you make with your established tastes will help you match your changes to reflect the style in the rest of the space. Make sure you write down all of the ideas you have for updates, but only pick one task at a time to tackle. Making small progress will give you the confidence to keep going and seeing each little task completed will empower you as well!

Most of all, have fun getting creative!

Look up new movies for the year!

Mark on your calendar the opening dates of any that you know you’ll want to see together. We can’t wait for Moonrise Kingdom. First, it’s set in New England, our home sweet home. Next, it’s 1965 — same year as my novel { this year is also a current love of mine – what I wouldn’t give for a time machine! }. Then, the overall theme of the movie seems to be camp-y. So perfect for me! It was only a matter of time before Wes Anderson got it exactly right! He’s been hovering around my tastes for quite some time now.

I’m also very excited about Big Miracle, but I have a feeling Ryan could take that or leave it. Still, he’s a sweet guy and I’m sure that he’ll accompany me to see this. I’ll make sure to include plenty of movies that he’s interested in this year, too. This weekend I hope we’ll have a chance to look up release dates that will be coming out in 2012 and add some more to our calendar. Going to see a picture together is such a classic date idea, and it charms me to no end! It also doesn’t hurt that our local theatre still has that old time hollywood feel { the employees wear vests + bow ties }.

Only one more Valentine suggestion left!

Perhaps you know a free spirited young lady? A boho belle, if you will.

Are you stumped on what to get her for Christmas? I’ve constructed this holiday gift guide to help you in your last minute holiday shopping. Hopefully this will alleviate some of your stress, and allow for a more breezy holiday season.

| Here are my gift suggestions for a bohemian belle |

1 | A dream catcher ornament: Tiny enough to hang on her Christmas tree, or attach to her keychain, this itty bitty dream dance ornament would make a pretty little something to stuff inside her stocking, or even to adorn the outside packaging of another gift!

2 | A journal: I love these create-your-own vintage book journals! The covers are upcycled from vintage books, and the whole thing is put together by hand. Your free spirited lady will love that this piece is so unique, and it will be the perfect place for her to keep track of all of those great ideas she has!

3 | Feather earrings: Just like the journal, these earrings are made by hand and crafted from upcycled materials. That makes for a happy Earth, and, therefore, a happy hippie {unless she’s vegan, that is}. They’ll look so pretty peeking out from her long locks.

4 | Mug cozy: Often concerned with her environmental impact, the boho belle might have an aversion to those little cardboard sleeves that get used up and thrown away so quickly. Give her this reusable and handmade coffee cozy instead! She’ll love the earthy feel of it, and feel stylish carrying it around.

5 | Tiger Lily Crown: The Red Velvet girls always have me in awe. I fall in love with just about every piece they create, and this one is no exception. The Tiger Lily feather crown will tug at the heartstrings of your ’70s inspired lady friend.

6 | Dream Catcher: If you liked the dream catcher idea, but didn’t think the ornament was quite right, perhaps this will fit the bill. Ward off those bad dreams with this vintage piece, and contribute to the whimsical decor in her sleeping space.

7 | A maxi dress or skirt: Maxis are a staple in a boho-chic wardrobe. They provide a free-flowing sort of vibe, and are great for layering. The neutral colours in this particular skirt will make it really easy for matching!

8 | Fringe banner: I love this banner. So much. For myself I might choose a different phrase, but this one should perfectly describe the girl that you’re shopping for! I can’t imagine a more fun statement piece for her pad than this.

9 | A turban: It’s getting colder and the season of headwear is upon us. A turban is a stylish way for a confident girl to stay warm. They’ve been spotted on the Olsen twins and Sarah Jessica Parker, and are very likely to go over well as a holiday gift this season.

10 | A braided headband: If the turban seems a bit daring for you, consider the braided headband. It achieves the same effect without quite so much of the risk factor.

Good luck shopping, my friends!

I’ve been thinking a lot about “the Modern Gentleman” lately.

With Christmas and Ryan’s birthday coming up, I’ve been doing a lot of brainstorming about the types of things that he would like, and also what he needs. Plus, a friend of his also recently asked me to help him decorate his bachelor pad {which he shares with another equally gent-like friend} and I’ve really enjoyed the creativity that this new perspective offers.

The Modern Gentleman, to me, is a man who enjoys aesthetics, but not as much as he appreciates function. He prepares for any situation to arise with style and grace. I’m happy to share some of my recent imaginings of this fellow with you, in hopes that maybe it’ll help you find a holiday gift for a certain Sir in your life who fits this description. So without further ado,

here are some suggestions for the modern gentleman in your life:

1 | A necktie or bow tie: The one pictured above is great, but a bow tie would do just as well. If your gent is anything like mine, he loves the character that comes with vintage + handmade, so skip the department store ties and go for something unique.

2 | A book store gift certificate or a pile of books: Any gentleman worth his salt is well-read. By passing on some of your favourites, or encouraging his next trip to the bookstore, you’ll be giving him something to look forward to in the evening when he retires to his study. You can really never go wrong with books.

3 | A stationery set: As avid appreciators of a simpler time, the modern gents that I know all love to write fine letters. Letter writing is a lost art these days, but not so to the man whom you’re shopping for! Give him a simple set with a classic look to it and he’ll add you to his pen pal list.

4 | Utilitarian boots: Although he usually prefers to dress up, a guy like this is certainly no stranger to practical footwear. Especially if he has grown up in New England like Ryan + company. He won’t be surprised at all to see that you have given him a pair of fine leather boots, in fact, he’ll shock you with how classy he can make them when paired with his slacks and vest!

5 | Mid-Century Modern anything: He’s probably charmed by the sleek and smooth look of Mid-Century Modern home decor, so anything in this style will please him. If you’re on a tight budget, check craigslist and thrift stores for stools and side tables, but if you have a bit more to spend, splurging on an Eames chair or a fab full length couch would be his dream come true!

6 | A flask: When he does opt for a man night out, he’ll need something subtle to contain his whiskey. Enter: the flask. It’s compact, functional, and an excellent accessory.

7 | A newspaper subscription: This one would be a good gift from someone close to him {girlfriend, close friend, parent} who knows his political leanings and such. You wouldn’t want to get a subscription to a very conservative news source for a man who is actually quite liberal, or vice versa. But, if you happen to know where your guy stands, he’ll benefit greatly from this gift. Gents are always well informed.

8 | A nice scarf: Don’t judge the man in the scarf. Chances are, he can pull it off better than you can. Anyway, that’s how it seems to me. The guys who have the guts to wear scarves usually wear them very well. Gents are stylish fellows, and scarves are very practical objects! It only makes sense that the two should go together!

9 | A record player: When he kicks back to read those books you got him, he’ll probably want something playing softly in the background. Also, he’ll need a way to practice his waltz. The record player has got him covered under both circumstances. Check Craigslist and thrift stores again for cheap finds!

10 | A gift basket of microbrews: He’ll be able to appreciate your region even more if you help him taste what it has to offer. Guys typically love beer, and trying new microbrews will allow him to pick out tiny little details and nuances in each bottle that will take him from consumer to connoisseur in no time.

The best part about buying for a modern gentleman, though, is that he’s probably incredibly appreciative. No matter what you settle on for a gift this year, I’m sure he’ll be able to tell that it’s coming straight from your heart, and he’ll therefore be very thankful.

Happy holidays!

We’re not playing the music yet.

And we’re not watching the movies yet either. But I’d be lying to you if I said we didn’t spend a significant amount of time yesterday brainstorming Christmas ideas. Ryan + I got jazzed on coffee, then sat down with paper and a pen to make a list of the people we wanted to make gifts for this year, and what we thought they might like.

Now we’re all ready to start working on our handmade Christmas! I’m really excited to share with you all of the projects that we’re going to be working on for gifts. I also have a couple of super cute ideas for holiday decor {I’ll make sure I share them with you when the time is right}.

Here are some of my favourite handmade/vintage holiday gifts from last year:

Any great ideas for your holiday crafting this season?

In the spirit of the upcoming Halloween season, how about this “what if”…

What if we all gave each other a spooky tale for Halloween instead of giving out candy? What if we passed along copies of H.P. Lovecraft and Agatha Christie and Edgar Allen Poe. Here‘s where I got the idea (thanks to Ryan for passing it along). Ah, I live in an ideal world, don’t I?

I just think it would be so amazing if, on Halloween night, instead of seeing children running up to a house, grabbing candy greedily, then running to the next, I saw a group of children gathered at each stoop listening intently to a ghost story told by the costumed elder stationed at the top of stairs, whose homely figure was outlined by the light from a flickering candle just inside.

Were this truly the case, here’s the tale that I’d choose as my All Hallow’s Read for you. So, settle in, dim the lights, and be prepared to get spooked!

Happy October to you!

xx.
