Have you been wondering where I’ve been?

Truth is – and I hate to admit this – that I’ve been cheating on you, blog. That’s right…I’ve been blogging elsewhere. Actually, this fall (right when I stopped posting here) I started building a new blog from scratch. The timing was serendipitous for me as I was starting to feel a little stagnant in this venue, and a rebirth was necessary, but I didn’t know where to go. Then fortune smiled upon me and gave me a job that I love. Four years after graduating college with a degree I didn’t really care for, and spending a lot of money to get it, I have finally found something that feels like it’s right for me. I was hired as the Media Specialist for a very small, independent health food store here in my home region.

Not only is it wonderful to be doing something that I love for a living (blogging, social media, design), but I am also doing it for a company that I truly believe in. As you probably know, Ryan and I have been vegetarians for many years, tested out a locavore diet on two different occasions, and we really work hard to spend our dollar votes wisely. This job encourages and engages all of my many interests, from upcycling to reading to eating – no easy task. So my disappearance from this corner of the internet didn’t mean I was disappearing entirely; instead, I’ve been dreaming up, designing, and building this website during my working hours (and also a little in my off time – shhh, don’t tell the boss!). They say that if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. It’s my sincere hope that you all have or find this happiness, too.

I would love for you to follow me there, even if you live out of state. We will be sharing all sorts of eco-friendly tidbits and healthy recipes. I’m going to be doing most of the blogging, but there are several other ladies involved right now and we are working on expanding our blogging team even further. Oh, yes, and I’m still writing for Goodwill International, too!

Anyway, I don’t want to call this goodbye, but it might be goodbye. There’s a chance I’ll come back, completely redo this blog and take off in a different direction, but for now I want it to just stay the way it is while I work on other things. Thanks for all of your support and encouragement over the many years that I’ve been writing here. I do hope we can stay in touch!

xx.

It’s been quite awhile since I’ve blogged.

This weekend we were gifted with a nearly perfect set of days, and since we’ve been so busy and spread thin lately, I’m feeling very thankful for each one. Here is what made them up, the ingredients for the perfect day (or days):

I’m expecting things to settle soon. one. Because we’ve put down some deposits for our wedding particulars (which feels so, so exciting!). We’ve made most of our decisions and are now just finalizing the big things. Once those are set, we can just enjoy the process of getting inspired, and making/collecting the perfect decor and details. two. I’ll finally have a consistent schedule at a day job that I love in just one week. My new job inspires me and flatters some of my most basic interests. It feels like me. So next week my life will be organized into a weekly routine and the only things in it will be things that I love. No more working nights. No more of having a different work schedule every week. Without consistency I’ve found that I feel very scattered and can’t focus even on the things I love to do the most.

xx.

P.s. My brother-in-law built that playhouse for LG from scraps! Childhood dream come true! My family joked that he was actually building it for me instead of my niece – ha! (I would have been just as excited as she was.)

our week in snapshots:

| highlights |

This week Ryan + I discovered a secret farmer’s market in the middle of the woods! There’s a long and winding road that connects our town to the one where Ryan works. We rarely ever take it because it’s narrow and there’s a one lane section that goes under a bridge. Before you go through, because you can’t be sure if anyone else is coming from the other direction due to the fact that the road beneath the bridge is not only unlit, but also curved, you have to stop and honk your horn to let anyone else know that you’re about to go under. Then you’re just crossing your fingers that the person coming in the other direction {if there is anyone} will honk his horn, too, before entering the tunnel. So, we usually avoid this New Hampshire back road. But, coming back from the eye doctor on Monday we decided to give it a try and saw a hand painted sign advertising for a farmer’s market at that exact time. We followed the signs further into the woods and discovered something reminiscent of our happy little markets in Portland, but on a much smaller scale. We came home with some extra fresh veggies and some locally made wine and called it a night with our new favourite show: Colonial House.

I’ve made my final preparations for the Goodwill Summer Conference for which I leave on Tuesday! I’m nervous to speak up on a stage, but was so happy to find out this week at Michelle Smith, the Communications Specialist of Goodwill Industries of Northern New England will be up on stage with me! When I worked for GINNE, Michelle and I bumped into one another occasionally, and found that we have quite a bit in common. Since we met, she’s been so supportive of my dream, and we still connect via the internet even though we’re no longer living in the same State. Yep, that’s the same Michelle who runs the Etsy shop MaineBelle and sponsored my giveaway last week! I’m really excited to see her at the conference and to have one familiar face up there with me on stage!

Rob + Pam’s house is really coming along, and they plan to move in next weekend! That means that both my best friend and Ryan’s best friend will be living within a half-hour of us. Obviously, we squeezed in a little time to help them painting. I can’t wait for them to feel settled and at home in the Lakes Region with us! But the best part of my week? Just a few minutes ago when a car drove by blasting this. Fantastic.

Happy Friday!

I never thought I would be one of those girls…

The kind who get so completely giddy over their engagement that they announce it dramatically on facebook and recount the entire proposal night minute by minute. I mean, I always knew I’d be happy and excited about it, but I didn’t peg myself for the type of lady who wanted to share pictures of the ring online and giggle about the wedding planning process with her best friend. I also never thought I’d be the type of person who gushes when they see a movie star, though, and that moment when I bumped into John Krasinski in New York was truly one of my low points. So, here I am sharing pictures online and learning a little more about my reaction to big life events in the process. I’ll be honest, though – I love reading other peoples’ engagement stories, so why not share my own?

* And since this venue is exclusively mine, not shared space with every person I’ve met from elementary school through post-college as facebook is, I figure if you’re here and reading this you won’t mind. So here we go, the story:

When I dream, I don’t see anything. I have feelings and I know things – if I’m dreaming that someone is chasing me through a park, I’ll just know that I’m in a park and have a feeling that someone is chasing me. I don’t see the trees or the grass or the person who is trailing me. So, last month when I had a dream that Ryan proposed to me with a beautiful twig ring that I actually saw, it felt very significant. The feelings in this dream were particularly strong. I woke up with the biggest smile on my face, and the image of the ring stamped into my brain. I saw it so clearly – a white gold ring, textured and shaped like a twig, with a tiny little diamond set into its center.

I sat up in bed and tried to get a grip on myself. Nothing had changed or happened… I just had a dream. But the dream was so real, so visual, that I just couldn’t get over it. I thought at first that I should just keep it to myself. I didn’t want to tell Ryan and have him feel pressured or weird, but I ended up mentioning it later on anyway {because we can’t keep anything from one another…}. It didn’t really seem to phase him, so I just forgot about it, too. Little did I know, he then set out to find someone to design the exact ring from my dream.

This Wednesday we both worked long shifts. At the end of the day we went home, put on our pjs and a Supremes record, and decided to celebrate being home. It was then, as we danced with joy at the end of our long day, and my “Friday” night, that he got down on one knee and presented me with the ring. At first I didn’t even see it. I felt awful for him being down there alone on the floor, waiting a few very long seconds for my answer, I hated to think that he was stressed, nervous, or unsure, so I got down on the floor, too, and wrapped my whole body around him in a hug. We giggled, and kissed, and promised each other forever, and I had barely even looked at the ring.

But when I drew back and gave him my hand, I looked more closely and realized I had seen it before! After hearing about my dream, he had it designed by Kristin Coffin, a native New Hampshirite whose policy on eco-consciosness is just the same as mine. All of the metals she uses are recycled, and the diamonds are conscientiously harvested. She cast my ring from an actual little twig – I don’t think this ring could be more perfect for me, and there’s none other in the world like it.

Ryan told me that he had planned on proposing to me this weekend in the canoe out in the middle of my lake. He picked up the ring on Wednesday morning and carried it around in his pocket at work all day, his hand darting downward to feel the little circle through the denim every couple of minutes. But later that night, while we danced and sang, he said he couldn’t stand to think of it in his pocket instead of on my finger for even a minute longer. At home in our pjs listening to records – what could be more us?

Our week in snapshots:

| highlights |

A lot can happen in a week. Since I last wrote, we have packed up our entire apartment, stuffed it into a Uhaul truck, and carted it across State lines. I always smile at the first town over the Maine border into New Hampshire: Freedom. An appropriately named entry point for two Shirefolk like ourselves that have been longing for our home State for quite some time now. “Welcome back to the Live Free or Die State”, that pine-y little town tells us.

To me, this already feels like home. My whole family {my parents and both siblings} is within a half hour drive of our new apartment. We haven’t all lived in the same State since I was three years old and my brother left for college – can you believe that? It’s been more than twenty years. My best friend came over yesterday and we spent hours on the couch chatting as though from 1996 to 2012 no time had passed at all. And since Ryan + I are no longer working until 10 pm or midnight, we have already been able to establish a normal sleep schedule. It feels right to be here again.

My shop reopening is in a mere 5 days and our internet still hasn’t been properly established. But, I’m going full steam ahead working on the line and preparing photo shoots and item descriptions. The packaging has been perfected, the extras have been decided {each purchase comes with freebies!} and the studio space becomes more organized every day. This is such an exciting time in my life and I’m so happy to be able to share it with all of you!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Snapshots from our week:

 | highlights |

This was a week of goodbyes. On Tuesday night we met up with our friends at Novare Res and took over their back room with giggles and good times. I will miss that crew so, so much when we’re gone. They’re a dynamic group of friends that understand our unique humor and share so many of our interests that it’s uncanny. I always thought that Ryan and I were unlike anyone else, but we really feel like we fit in with our Howard Street/Congress Street/Thunderflat/Fort Sheridan friends. I know we won’t soon find friends as amazing as these.

As if those goodbyes weren’t bittersweet enough, on Wednesday night a party was thrown in our honor at work. A lot of our co-workers were present and all of the clients that we’ve been assisting for the past three and four years, too. It felt good to look around that big room at all of the people we’ve been working with for so long. I think our time in Portland was very well spent.

I’ve been feeling a lot like a lame duck, these past weeks. We still have time left here, but not enough that we could really start up new projects or plan new contributions. My focus has shifted to our new life, but we’re still here sitting in the old one waiting for Monday to come. And the ocean wind has been blowing fiercely as though it, too, can sense the change.

At this time next week I’ll be writing from New Hampshire!

Our week in snapshots:

| highlights |

Another whirlwind of a week! Although, I feel like we made a lot of progress – finally. We heard back from our new landlord that he selected us for his two bedroom apartment, which enabled us to sign our new lease and begin some serious planning for our next chapter. The location of the place is fantastic for a one car family seeing as we’ll be able to walk nearly everywhere that we want to {this is very rare in rural New Hampshire}. I chatted with a shop owner for about an hour and she’s thinking about taking me on part time for a little help!

Our current apartment was on the market for a whopping one day before getting rented to the first and only viewer! I guess he handed over the security deposit as soon as he stepped foot out our door. It’s a pretty neat space and part of me will be a little sad to see it go. Still, the bigger part of me is happy to get the heck outta here and live on Golden Pond {literally}!

I received the final details for another job that I applied for in the fall – I got it! And, it’s my absolute dream job. *On April 20th my first post as a professional blogger for Goodwill Industries International will go live! I’ll be thrifting for an organization I believe in and blogging about it. My two favourite activities! The only way to describe my excitement is to say that I’m over the moon. Good things happen for those who can stand the wait!

While sewing this week I suddenly heard a swarm of helicopters above my house. Remembering just in time what the occasion was, I threw on a jacket and boots and got to the end of my street just in time to see the Presidential motorcade passing by! The street was abuzz with Portland residents waiting to catch a glimpse of Obama as he entered the Museum of Art for an event.

Today I spent several hours making up more products for my shop. I’ve also received some more packaging elements in the mail, and I’m only one to-do away from crumpling up my first list and tossing it in the recycling bin. There is nothing better than doing what you need to do and seeing on paper that it’s complete. I should be able to polish the last task off tomorrow then throw myself fully into phase 2 of my shop’s reopening!

Here’s to spring – the season of rebirth!

It most certainly is!

I’ve been dreaming + scheming over furniture arrangements lately, but if you’ve seen any of my home tour posts {or if you’ve ever been to my home}, you may notice that the above floor plan is not for our current apartment. Curious, no? Here’s why:

Yes! We are! We’ve talked to our landlord, to our friends, and our boss, and I just couldn’t keep you in the dark any longer! Ryan + I are planning a move back to our native New Hampshire, hopefully by May 1st! Now, this is just a tentative floor plan seeing as we may not actually get this apartment,  however the location, the price, and the size of it are all right, so we’ve sent our application along.

As for jobs, we’re applying in all sorts of fields. This is a chance for us to redefine our lives in so many ways, and we’d love it if the area to which we are moving helped to do some of that for us so we can become an appropriate reflection of the beautiful place we’ll be living. I’m so excited to be near my best friend, Ryan’s best friend, and my family. I’ll get to be around more often to see my little niece + nephew gain their years, and to enjoy the simple joys of the lakes and the mountains again. More on this as it develops!

Have a fantastic night!

I had a wonderful birthday yesterday.

Part of that was because so many people took the time to send some wishes my way. One reader even sent a birthday card in the mail — so thoughtful! Thank you all! I’ll be sending five of yesterday’s commenters a special package in the mail to say thanks for taking the time to leave their thoughts and best wishes. Four winners will have an email from me waiting in their inbox right now! Shelly of The Decayed Gentlewoman, please email me at Jeeze.Julia@gmail.com with your address so I can send the package your way, too. As soon as I receive your addresses, I’ll pop the packages in the mail!

Isn’t that negative strip brilliant? What a creative idea! So, birthday wishes were my first “thank you”. My second is for everyone who voted for me to take over the Sunset Hill House and share all of their deepest darkest secrets { like the recipe for their delicious wild blueberry pancakes or how they make their own maple syrup }. Thanks to you, I’ve won! They selected me on March 1st to come stay at their Inn for a week and show you the ins and outs of their amazing little hotel! I’m not sure when I’ll be visiting, but you can be sure that I’m already jumping up + down with excitement. Can’t wait to tell you more!

You’re all wonderful!

What a dream!

This is the Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire { not too far from home, but just far enough that it feels like a getaway }. It’s probably the most beautiful little Inn that I’ve ever come across. I mean, can you imagine staying here for a relaxing five day vacation? Going snow shoeing, hiking through the White Mountains, borrowing their bicycles to explore the grounds or wandering on foot through the gardens in the summer? Sounds absolutely ideal!

As if that isn’t enough, though, they’re offering me a chance to have all of that plus the exclusive opportunity to go behind the scenes! If I like the Maple Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast that I’m eating for breakfast, I can just waltz right into the kitchen and have their chef teach me how to make it! I can even sit in on staff meetings if I’d like! The coolest part about the whole deal? They’re encouraging me to share all of my little findings with you. I get to snap photos, take notes, play reporter, and tell you guys all about it. But, I’ll need your help to be selected.

If you want to get the inside scoop from this darling little Inn, vote for me { Julia Berry } in this four question survey. I promise I’ll share every detail of the adventure! Have a peek at their facebook fan page and their website if you’re interested in learning more!

Thanks for the help!

xx.
